DD15 is starting to wear shorts and capris for the warmer weather (60 degrees is warm to her) and she can't stand how white her legs are.

Does anybody have any experience with self tanning products. Which one works best or which one works terrible. We want something that will not turn her orange (anybody remember Sudden Tan from the 1970's).

I don't want an Oompa Loompa for a daughter;)

TIA

I recently purchased the Jergens brand. I only used it about 3 times. It was an orangey color and it made me itchy  I put it right in the trash.

It seems like I've tried them all - the one I keep coming back to is Lancome's Flash Bronzer gel. It dries quickly and has a color guide to see where you're putting it. The end result is very natural. It is a bit pricey, but a little goes a long ways and the quality is great. I usually only buy it when Lancome is having a free sample with purchase.

Some helpful tips:

Make sure your daughter's legs are well moisturized. Any self tanner will not work well on dry, flaky skin.

Wash your hands really well after applying. Paying close attention in between fingers and around nails.

Good luck!

A couple of weeks ago I tried a Neutrogena self tanner that I'd received as a free sample. I really messed up on my feet-ankles. I missed half of one foot, and the back of the other ankle. When I tried to fix it later, I got too much on my feet and ankles. I tried to scrub and scrub the next day, but little came off.

I think that next winter - when I'm wearing pants all the time - I'll try lots of different brands and methods until I get it right.

I'm using the Loreal brand now. Make sure she exfoliates really well before applying. I only use it every other day. So far, so good but be careful in the feet and ankles.

I also use Loreal. I've been using it for the past 2 years. If I go pale, I then use it every day for 4 days and then switch to every other day to maintain.

Loreal Sublime. I've been using it for years. The trick to application: rub, rub, rub it in! Once you think you've spread it all out and rubbed it in well, keep rubbing it in! :)

Be methodical about applying it. Do one leg at a time--I do the top part of my R leg, then the bottom part, then my foot, then move on to the L leg. Otherwise you will forget where you spread it and you'll get patchy!

Be careful on any dry or slightly wrinkly areas like knee caps, elbows, and heels--the color can get in the little lines/creases.

Wash your hands well and make sure you clean under your fingernails, otherwise you'll get extra tan under your nails.

I used to moisturize before I put on the self-tanner, but with the current formulation of Loreal Sublime, I think it works better if I don't moisturize before I apply the self-tanner. I always exfoliate (just scrub with a washcloth in the shower, no need to buy any special products to exfoliate).

Start out with a Medium Shade and if it's not dark enough, try it again the next day or move on to Medium Dark.

Let it dry at least 15 minutes before you put on your clothes.

Thanks everybody....

It sounds like it might be a pain in the rear to use.

Maybe she can just tell everybody that she is wearing white leggings:goodvibes

I'll have to think on this one...

The Jergens Foam is not bad, I like it better than the lotion. I recently out of curiousity tried the spray tan where they airbrush it on. I loved it!!!! looked very very good, if you have somewhere special to go or vacation I totally recommend it. It lasts about 1 1/2 to 2 weeks and the cost is about $35.

I have the same problem as your DD - ghostly white limbs - and I second the Loreal Sublime recommendation. I just recently started using it again and after only two applications I had people complimenting my skin.

It's the least orange of any products that I've tried. I think that PrincessKitty1 gave you some really good guidelines on how to use it. Just be sure to keep track of where you've applied it, rub it in really well and wash your hands thoroughly afterwards.

Ive only use self tan once and it went on really well.

Got a lovely bronzed colour.

I had been told by everyone to wash my hand well so not to get extra tan,so i did and I went to bed well pleased with myself.

Unfortunately I forgot I sleep on my back with my hands resting on my tummy......

8 hours later and orange palms in the morning.:headache:

Never again.

I love the Banana Boat Summer Color Self Tanning Lotion. It doesn't streak and has a pretty color--not orangy. Just wash your hands after you finish applying it.

I highly recommend Faux Tan from Bare Escentuals!!
A trick: put some sunscreen on your hands before applying, then was very well with soap & water after.

I was never happy with Jergens - I think it has a bad smell to it.
In general the foam dispensers are easy to use and you can see where you have put it on.

I am pale-as-a-ghost white. I have used Neutrogena build-a-tan a lot. It works well, but I always apply prior to going to bed so that I don't have to deal with the slight smell during the day (it's not a bad smell, but I am sensitive to smells). When first trying to get the tan I would put it on 2-3 times a day though. It will turn a little orange on me, but it takes like 12 days to do that if I don't stop applying. Once I get the color I like, I only reapply every 3-4 days or so.

By my tag, you can see I love tan towels from HSN too. Fairly foolproof, not messy (that's the best as I really don't like lotions!) But they're not that cheap and you have to wait for them.
I did see tan towelettes at Target from Loreal? I think today - but it was like $10 for 6 half-body ones, and for something I'm not sure about I would rather get the ones from HSN.

I am going to recommend one I haven't tried yet - True Blue Spa Strike Gold from Bath and Body Works. It's $15/tube, so more than drugstore but less than others... but every single review (which are a LOT, I have to say) I've read on this has said it's fabulous. I'm getting some tonight. They say it's foolproof and a great color development, not yellow or orange at all.

I have tried a number of self tanners because I am very fair and wear high spf whenever I am in the sun. But despite being proud to be pasty, I still prefer the way my body looks with a little color.
I have had decent results without hassle from Loreal and Banana Boat self tanners. Simply shower (use a body pouf or loofah), dry off thoroughly, self tan, wash hands, and get dressed.
My all time favorite self tanner that I swear by (but is a hassle) is Toma's Tan Perfect. It is a wretched brown color that I slather on at night before bed. It looks insanely dark so you can see where it is. Go to sleep and wake up in the morning and take a shower and I always have the most natural tan. It does get on the clothes you sleep in but washes out easily.
Good Luck

As someone who is one step up from albino and is prone to dry skin, I LOATHE self-tanners. I always end up looking slightly orange and splotchy on dry skin areas no matter if I exfoliate.

What I've found to be the best is the Vaseline or Jergens glow/bronzing lotions. (I personally like Vaseline better.) I get the fair skin type and put it on every night. I just takes a couple days and you have enough of a base tan where you don't feel uncomfortable in capris/shorts, but not obnoxious where everyone knows you're slathering yourself in self-tanner.

Slightly spendier is Benefit's Flamingo Fancy. I like this lightly on my legs, arms, collarbone. It's got a bit more shimmer (but not glitter), so it's great for special occasions or when I go out.

Tan Towels are great, they are like a wet wipe. You can get them online or on QVC or HSN can't remember which. Very easy and never orange!

I've wondered about these! Do they have a funny smell? I'm paranoid about funny smells with self-tanners.

They have a very faint smell. I don't think it would be a problem. They give you a great tan that lasts a couple of days. You do need to reapply. Love them.

I am convinced ... I am ordering. Thanks!
