This is one thing that drive me nuts! I can't understand these people who have carts just piled HIGH and insist on using this. Half of them don't seem to have a clue as to what they're doing, so it doesn't save much time as it is!

I just don't understand why they can't just put a 20 item limit on them or something. :confused3

the store I go to has an express self checkout and then 3 where you can bring as much as you want in....

yep, ours too

The grocery store I shop at has a limit of 12 items for those lanes. Still takes a while though when you get someone who doesn't understand how to use them. I'd rather just go through the regular lines. Sometimes they can be quicker.

OK - as a PT worker at a store that has self check out...we get these genius"Es" who come through self check out with small trees, bags of concrete sand, etc....

HELLO....the whole point of SELF check out is that ESSENTIALLY NO ONE is there to help you out!!

It's amazing how many idiots there are out there!

:cool1: Well with the way some of the teeny boppers at the store I shop at package groceries and being an ex checker bagger myself I would just rather do it myself..... :flower:

Amazingly, as slow as the self-checkers are, they are STILL faster than many of the cashiers at the WalMart I used to go to in VA. Of course down here they have YET to install the blasted things so I am stuck waiting for Buffy to finish filing her nails before she bothers to check out the 7 people in front of me! Yes, in that situation, I'd MUCH rather go through the self-checkout.....it might be slow, but at least it's moving, unlike the other lines!

But I do agree....they should have some reserved for 12 items or less :)

Of course, they have 3-4 attended lanes for 12 items or less, that are always deserted....and only 2-3 lanes for those of us with cartfuls of groceries....what sense does that make?!?!? I'd stop going but they really do beat everyone else hands-down on prices....so if I'm on that road, it's WalMart instead of Publix...I just can't be in a hurry!

I think some should have a limit but not all the self checkouts.

They should have limits on some check outs. I like to do it myself no matter how much is in my cart. I can keep a closer eye on prices and I can bag it myself. No more lettuce with the ice cream. No more buns and bread under the cans of soup. I can put the frozen with the frozen so it is faster to put in the freezer bag in the truck. We have at least a 30 minute drive home. If you don't pack right....melted ice cream everywhere :confused3

However....when I only have a couple of items I just want to check out and go not wait in a line forever :)

I HATE this! Especially when all I have is a loaf of bread and a can of soup and all the self-checkout lines are filled with overflowing buggies with people who are too dang slow to even be trying to use them. GRRR!

Why do they need a limit? There are other lines available. Don't get behind someone with a lot of stuff. I guess I don't see a problem with people with full carts going through the self check out. Walmart is the only store we have and they have express self-check outs and regular self-check-outs. If someone were going through the express check-out with more then 12 items or what ever, then that would be an issue.

If i have lots of stuff and it's only me I don't use self checkout.... If my DD is with me and it's a shorter line than I do....

Ok, well, I just had to go through the self-checkout at Kroger the other morning with $90 worth of groceries and I was NOT a happy camper myself about it. Luckily, there was no one behind me or I think I'd have just left the cart full of groceries there.

I rarely ever use the self-checkout just because it irks me that stores cut costs by hiring fewer cashiers and have ME do the work instead. So even if I just have a few items, I shy away from them unless I absolutely have to use them.

However, Kroger opens at 7 a.m. I had to take Monday off to take DH to the airport so thought I'd do my grocery shopping early that morning after dropping dd at school. It would have been a fantastic time to shop except for the fact that they have no cashiers until after 8:00. So, I had to ring it myself and hike back and forth to the one cashier for coupons, bottle returns, and produce. Also, you cannot remove any items from the bagging scale until you are completely done which meant I had groceries piled everywhere. I was so annoyed by the end of that operation.

I learned my lesson. From now on if I shop early in the morning, I'm going to Meijer where they have real cashiers at 7:30 a.m. :teeth:

you are so right
our self check outs stink
if you go there with a full carriage it will take you twice as long to get out
asd the machine will callfor a manager like 100 times
and you will drive yourself nuts

I've only had the opportunity to use them once or twice. None of the local stores have them and when we shop at SuperWalmart, we usually have a cart load and don't use them because we have so many groceries. That Walmart seems to have enough of them that one or two people with a cartload wouldn't make that big of a difference.

In my area, some of them do have limits some don't. I take my orders to the ones that don't of course. I like splitting up my order so my coupons will triple instead of me going back into the store to go back through a line.

I have seen some folks with full baskets go faster than ones with just a few items! :earseek:

Several of our stores have self checkouts (no limits posted) but have no regular express checkouts. :confused3

I don't think there should be a limit, some but not all. I mean, just because someone has a basket full, shouldn't mean they automatically have to wait in long lines.

I don't use the self checkout in my store, because it only takes cash. I never have cash. I either pay with check or cc.

They never have them open at the Wal-Mart here. They closed them because there was too much theft when people were using them.

Think it'll be interesting to see how they manage thru the Christmas season without those open. That takes away a lot of lanes!!!
