Hi,
we are to discuss our DD8's IEP for speech and selective mutism. Not sure what goals we should have on there. SHe has made huge advances in communication, but we still feel that work is needed. We want counseling, but the school counselor doesn't really see the need. We have not heard any progress from last year, so not sure about this issue.

Basically, just wondering what others have out there for their SM kids.

Thanks,
Linda

If you obtained significant progress in the manifestation then it is definitely time to address the underlying causes (probably was from the start). While I am not a specialist in all aspects of this, it is an occasional manifestation of my area of study. Generally trauma or significant levels of stress can be contributors especially if there are any speech or social skills deficits so a good evaluation in all those areas is important. This would give you the guidance to know what in needed for an appropriate education for your child.
