He said he would rather die than be taken alive and go into a U.S. prison. He surrendered today. That deck keeps getting smaller and smaller!

The good thing is that he surrendered himself after negotiations, so he must have something to trade. And he knows everything that went on in the country, he should be able to give us some good intelligence. Maybe he even knows where Saddam is.

I think you are right, Laura, I think it's a good sign too.

Amazing what happens when dying becomes a distinct possibilty rather than just a bold, dramatic statement.

What's amazing is how self-rightous, phony, and deceptive some in the Bush administration can be. . . and how many American's are buying it. .

"We're not sure yet, but it appears that Aziz might have been a key player in Saddam's regime.. we're checking that out. . ." Donald Rumsfeld, commenting on the surrender of Aziz 2 days ago.

Newsweek story, 2002

"Rumsfeld key player in Iraq policy shift- Cables, Natl. Security Council affidavit reveal depth of U.S. assistance
to Saddam despite chemical arsenal"

"President Reagan authorized Rumsfeld to travel to Baghdad as part of a trip throughout the Middle East, the arrangements being made between the U.S. Interests The visit, which included meetings with Aziz and Saddam Hussein, was laid out in cables sent by the Interests Section and Rumsfeld himself to George Shultz, then the secretary of state. . Disnee Dad Says...............................So what happened a generation ago, if it is even true, changes the facts of today?
I had friends who are no longer friends, and I have met new friends. Isn't that the same way with countries?

I'll be the first to admit we haven't had the best foriegn diplomacy, in over 30 years. But that cuts across every president in the last 30 years, or more.

From a historical stand point, in 50 years Bush 2 will will be viewed as a great leader, one of the best presidents, even if his associates did all the work.

Washington was mocked, Lincoln was hated, the only thing Bush needs to do is fix the economy. If he can do that he will join the greats. If he can't, then he follows in his fathers footsteps.

PS. You pick. Death, or three nice meals a day, and shelter. Tariq simply decided, I want pot roast, and potatoes with gravy,as opposed to dying. Good choice.

Because our president let him have that option, not one they would offer us.

The topic of this thread is Tariq Aziz saying he wouldn't be taken alive and Iraq would be victorious and then surrendering.

WillyJ,

The first photo doesn't appear to be from 1983, nor does that appear to be Aziz that Rummy is meeting with.

As to the first quote, Aziz was a "former" Deputy Minister is Saddam's regime at the start of the war. He wasn't considered a major player and "plugged in" at the top of the pyramid. In fact he was only ranked something like the 49th out of the 55 "Most Wanted". The "we think" quote was about allegations that he may have been more active in the Iraqi government at the outbreak of the war than some previously thought.
