does anyone know about this organization or has anyone raised a puppy?i read about it in 2 magazines and it sounds like a really good expiriance. the problem is there is none in my area. what can i do?

I can give you some information. The Seeing Eye is the organization in Morristown New Jersey. It was the first group in the US. Their website is seeingeye.org I teach students with visual impairments and am also an orientation and mobility specialist. I was able to visit The Seeing Eye in the summer of 2000. It is a very nice organization. Puppies do go out to puppy raisers, often 4H members. I do not know how far away they will place a puppy. We toured some of the school and were able to work blindfolded with some of the dogs in training.
There are other organizations that train dogs for blind and visually impaired. One is in California and is named something similar to Guide Dogs for the Blind. I have heard there are other smaller groups across the country. I seem to think there is one in Michigan also. If you do a search under "guide dogs" or "dog guides" you will find more information.

This doesn't have much to do with the topic, for that I'm sorry. I just wanted to say thank you to you both. My son is visually impaired, and it's just nice to hear about people who are willing to sacrifice to improve his, and others like him quality of life.
