Security Check at my Local Library!

I believe it is a sad day for our country when I go to my local library in small-town America and there is now a security person set up outside the A/V department. They have had so many A/V items taken from the library, they will search your purses and backpacks before allowing you to enter and search them when you come back out. How could it have come to this?

They have those alarms that they have in stores at my library, try to leave with anything not checked out and an alarm goes off!

My couty library has had security for a LONG time. I'm not certain if it was there pre 9/11 or not, but it has been there.

There is a purse/backpack check.

Sad? True, but necessary.

In Philadelphia earlier this year a 9yr girl walked into a bathroom and her grandmother waited outside. When she did not come out, she went in looking for her and found her in a heap in one of the stalls. She had been beaten and sexually assaulted. In the library!

We have security at our local library. I take my kids every week for storytime. They have metal detectors and a guard. It is comforting to know that there is someone else there to look out for the kids.

Recently, a man with a large McDonalds coffee cup was lingering in the childrens section. He was asked to leave. He refused, police were called and he was physically removed only to return later and arrested. He had alcohol in the cup with him. Who knows what his intentions were, but I am glad that there was a guard to keep an eye on him until police arrived!
