Security at your place of work

Do you have limited access to various parts of your company? Have to sign in or get someone to open a door to access different areas?

Just Curious. This week our company-located in a rural area- started some strict security measures -I feel like I work in a big city!

My computer at work is accessible only with a password (which only myself, Pastor, and the Treasurer's have) and I can access Pastor's computer through the network, but only shared files.

When I worked, we had card key access to only the areas that we needed. I worked as Admin. Assist to VP of Operations and all personnel in the building. Then I worked in Data Security so I had complete access. Probably had more access than I really should have.

I work at a school, and everyone gets buzzed in. The door person recognizes all the employees so you don't have to buzz in at the office, but she can unlock the door from her station.

I have to use my ID/security badge to enter either the main parking lot or the entry gate from the side parking lot. Then I use the same badge to access the front door. This badge then lets me into the hallway via the lobby door. I can then either go upstairs in the elevator or use a biometric hand scanner to enter the main computer room floor.

I have about 6 levels of security to pass just to get to my desk in order to turn on my laptop and use my passwords to access our system.

Oh, well, that's life, I guess.

I have to enter with a special knock to one room (well, almost), they won't let me access another room (they might if I promise to not touch any buttons ), but other than that, I have a key to everywhere else.

Yes, we have three levels of security where I work, and your badge has a little strip with your security clearance encoded. Sounds so high-tech, but it's way overrated! I have top clearance, and agree w/buzzlady: it's probably more access than I should have!

We also need to get buzzed into the parking lot as well as the building itself.

Funny you posted this. Guess what happened to me yesterday? I work at a retail part-time while going to school and in the summer. A young guy walked into the store and I sort of noticed him but didn't think much, he was just another customer. Until I walked into our back stock room to get something and this young guy is standing right there, facing our little closet where our purses are and has obviously stolen some cash. I was completely confused at first, a million things raced through my head. I asked him what he was doing back there, he looked extremely nervous and asked if he could use the back washroom, which confused me even more. I told him he could not because it was for staff use only. He then darted around me and quickly left the store. Then it struck me like a ton of bricks, OUR PURSES! So went through mine and there was nothing taken. But the other woman I work with had all her cash stolen, I think I had caught him in the act right as I walked in, he must have been about to look in my purse when I opened the door. I never carry cash
Scary though, I guess because you never expect things like that to happen to you, when it does happen, your mind tries to justifiy that the situation is actually something positive than the reality before you.

DisneyJules, I can't believe that your store doesn't provide lockers to lock up your stuff in while you are there. Our stores (I'm an Asst. Manager at Waldenbooks) all must have lockers for all employees to use during their shifts, and all personal items must be locked up. In addition, there is a chime that sounds when anyone opens the door to our back room. Furthermore, there is a panic alarm on the back door that can only be turned off with a key, which is in the safe. Our store is in a mall that is in a high-crime area of town, so we need those safeguards.

I've caught many people going into our back room, and they always say the same thing... they were "looking for the bathroom" or something.

You need to push for getting lockers in your back room that you can use during your shifts.

The only room I can't get into without a higher management person with me is the accounting office. I am able to get into all the computers for the store and every other area.

We also have lockers for everyone to lock there stuff in.

We have a keycard entry at all of our doors -- the only areas I can't get into is the server room and HR, during off-hours. HR locks their door, while the server room has a password protected keypad lock.

I could get fired for this but:

We have keycards at all doors
I have no access to the vault (fireproof room) that is a Code 7
I am also not allowed in the large compyter room Code 5

I am able to get into the vending machine area though

We have keycards that get us into the parking garage. Anyone can come up in the elevators but after that, you need your keycard to access any interior areas in the building. I can only access the floors/offices that I need to work on. Any other offices in the building, I need to be escorted into.

We've got keycards, but it's very easy to get buzzed in or walk in with someone.

A couple years ago, after a layoff, someone broke in (crawled in through an open window). I don't think he "got anything" because someone was working late and called 911.

Bathrooms are not locked, nothing. Parking is directly under the building, too. In the 7 years I've worked here, I've never seen the parking gates closed.

Oh, yeah, I work just 30 miles north of NYC. My office is directly on the water, we were watching the twin towers on 9/11.

Its like getting inside Fort Knox around here anymore. You've got security guards at the front door, then you have access cards beyond that. If you forget your badge one day, you can forget about getting inside.

I would assume its like that in most buildings throughout D.C. and its surrounding areas since 9/11.

My husband works for a company with such tight security that I've never been on the property, seen his office, or even made it past the parking gates to get inside. Basically, I just take his word for it that he works there...
