pin values are subjective. What I consider valuable, someone else may not. I would suggest you trade only with castmembers for a while. I've been collecting/trading since the "beginning" and even I find it difficult sometimes to trade with other guests.

If you are only paying $2.00 per pin - that's what they are worth.

If you put cheap pins on lanyards, that is what you will find. Is that bad? No, because someone else may want your cheap pin.

I and many other long time pintraders have been going through our trader books and using old limited edition pins. I use old LE's especially when I find a lanyard pin (found only on CM lanyards, not sold on property) I like.

FigmentFan, were you on stage or off stage when the CM told you that on the Keys tour? On stage, CM's can stretch the truth somewhat and believe me they stretched the truth a bit as far as refreshing goes.
