Secret recipes

Can someone please explain to me why a person (who is not a professional chef, btw) would announce that the recipe she brought to a party was top secret and she "would not be sharing it with anyone-don't bother to ask." A neighbor did this at a recent party. She brought a dessert that was ok (and that's being generous with the praise-rather dry, imho) and then announced that it was a big secret. Was she just trying to call attention to herself or her contribution? First of all, no one was asking for her recipe; and second, I think whatever she intended backfired because she got to take home more than 2/3's of her secret dessert.

I love to share recipes with people and have a ton of cookbooks filled with recipes obviously shared by other people. So why would someone be so adamant about a secret recipe? :confused3 I can totally understand a professional not sharing, but a regular person???? :confused3 Any thoughts?

Sounds like a pompous butt hole to me. Sorry if I shouldn't have said that! :rolleyes1

I think people who do things liek that are saying "look at me" and "look how wonderful I am".

I tend to ignore them. They are sad souls really.

Look out! She intends to bring that dish to every funciton she attends from now on! Something for you to look forward to.

I never understood top secret recipes whether they be family ones or not. I love sharing with friends and family....makes absolutely no sense to me......

I don't understand that attitude either. My mil does that, "I'm taking this recipe to the grave with me"! She's a terrible cook, so it's ok by me! :lmao:

If it wasn't good then be glad she kept the recipe to herself. :cool1:

Personally, I don't share my favorite recipes when I take food places anymore. In the past I've had people ask for a recipe then the next function we're at they've not only made "my" recipe they've screwed it up then go on to tell everyone it was mine. And by screwing it up, I mean they've changed ingredients or subsituted items so it's truely not "my" recipe anymore.

Oops, I was kind of thinking the same thing... but you're right, I shouldn't have said that either! :confused3

:scared1: OMG! Tell me it wasn't your Oyster Dressing recipe! I'd DIE if someone messed with my PaPaw's recipe!!!! :rotfl:

That is SO funny!!

I always share recipes when asked. Never understood the "Neener, neener, neener" attitude from those who taunt you about not giving you their recipe. Although I can see why you would feel the way you do, CajunDixie, if they blame you when their "new and improved" version doesn't turn out.

I don't understand people who won't share their recipes, especially elderly people who make something the whole family enjoys, but then the recipe dies with them. It's sad for their family members, and very selfish of them.

I asked a friend for one of her recipes for a party I was having, and she said it was a secret - she would not share the recipe but actually made it and brought it over. I found the recipe on a can of Ro-Tel tomatos.

Secret recipie = bought it at the store and put it in her own dish to make it look "authentic." Secret because she has no idea what's in it or how it's made...

OHHH! I have to admit I'm really selfish when it comes to recipes- and NOPE none of mine are original - but I hate to share them! I guess it comes from not wanting someone to show up @ the same event with the exact same recipe as me - or the fact that I'd be "known" by something yummy I made & asked to bring it - if everyone made it then anyone could bring it-- does that make sense??? I do share some of the recipes I have, but there are quite a few that are so good/original that I just don't share...

As I said I guess I'm just too selfish!

NOW I have NEVER walked into a place announcing I wouldn't share a recipe -now that's CRAZY! She definitely wanted the attention -

This thread is hilarious! I am not an accomplished cook, but I would be more than flattered if someone asked me for a recipe. And, yes, I absolutely share :thumbsup2

What is cracking me up, is this reminds me of a coworker. Anytime anyone brings in a home-made treat, she always pipes in with "I have a really good recipe for that." She did this to me with my home-made cinnamon rolls. "She has a really good recipe for cinnamon rolls." "She has a really good recipe for taco salad." BTW I]'ve tried the taco salad, trust me, it is nothing spectacular. And, while she says she has a really good recipe for this or that - IT DOESN'T COuNT IF YOU DON"T BRING IT IN AND SHARE!

Sorry for the hijacking! But thanks for letting me vent about my coworker!

Sorry- I couldn't resist!

ok honestly, i have a couple recipees that are begged for every time i make them, and i will not take them to the grave, but as long as i am here, i'll have them and no one else will... one is my bbq sauce recipee, i got it from an old guy that taught me, shortly before he closed his bbq place, and i will pass it on to a young man here before ew move,,

I was at a party once and asked someone for their recipe...they were very rude about not sharing it. so...I went home and typed a few different things in on the internet and came up with a recipe that seems very similar, if not exact, to what she made! Now I make it and take it to the parties, and I ALWAYS share the recipe with anyone that asks!!!!!
