SEC Fans, Lane Kiffin going to USC

I like Alabama. It's Nick Saban I can't stand. I think he's a mercenary.

College/NFL coaching is a business. He got better offers to coach at other places and took them.

What if you got an offer for a better job with better pay somewhere else? Would you take it? What if an even better job with even more money came about a year later? Would you take it?

To a point. If a coach has run its course at a school, then maybe it's time to part ways. And maybe you can say that was true for Saban at LSU. But then to go back to Alabama, a rival, ugh. I wasn't happy Steve Spurrier ended up at South Carolina, but it's not like he went to FSU, Miami or Georgia.

And no, if I had a bunch of people counting on me, I wouldn't pick up and leave, even if it was a better job offer. Of course, I stayed in my last job 20 years, so I know a bit about loyalty.

First of all...I am a Tennessee fan, and a Tennessee graduate.

I take GREAT offense at the OP's original post about how classless the fans are. A few crazy college kids do some stupid things last night, and therefore we are all classless fans :confused3.

I have never been a Lane Kiffen fan, and only started coming around to somewhat tolerate him when he took the Vols to a bowl game. It isn't that he is going USC that gets me...it is how he did it, and the timing. It is quite obvious now that we were a 'it'll do' school until something better came along, it just came along after 1 season.

He has had so much trouble keeping his trap shut in speaking engagements, and lots of other NCAA issues as well. He just doesn't seem very mature IMO.

The few USC fans/friends that I have are not happy with it, either.

But please don't call all Tennessee or SEC fans classless. You don't know most of us...

I would like to second this post! I don't condone what the students did and I am not proud of my fellow UT fans, however I don't think it is fair to include all fans in your assumption.

What do you mean about rival? weren't you happy that he stayed in the SEC? like Spurrier?

He took it the same year that he took a HUGE retention bonus, which is the issue. When an ethical person accepts a retention bonus, he stays put for the time covered under the terms.

FWIW, I am not a "nothing but the SEC" type of college football fan -- a good game is a good game AFAIC, and I'll enjoy it whereever I find it.

I really don't see how being a diehard fan of team A makes it OK to be wishing defeat on team B when the outcome has no effect on team A. That's just spiteful and nasty, and does not display good sportsmanship.

I wonder if that is why he had to pay back $800,000 to the school? Kiffin was on the Dan Patrick show this morning. Interesting interview, but this USC alum is not happy about our new coach. We have enough NCAA problems we are facing. Kiffin is bringing in his own questionable practices to make matters worse...

Contract clause - not sure of the specifics, but that's what it is.

BTW, the "Dear Lane Kiffin, we hate you, Love, The Vols" facebook page (ugly, ugly posts and photos) is up to 40k members.

I actually am pretty sure I have never made it known what school I rooted for growing up or the school I attended.

And he had to pay back that retention bonus, but still, college football is a business.

:rolleyes::rolleyes:

No other conference has fans that feel such a sense of entitlement then the SEC. People saying, "oh I only watch SEC footbal" everything else is boring. That is BS and everyone knows it. I mean come on, of course everyone wanted to see Florida vs. Troy this last year  I have never said that the SEC isn't a great conference, it is. The last few years, they have proven to be the best at the top. However, watching Big 12 or Pac 10 football is just as great depending on the matchup. No logical fan was watching Florida vs. Troy over USC vs. Ohio State last year.

My beef with the SEC comes down to two things:
1. How top heavy the conference is. The good teams are really good, but they drop-off after that.
2. The scheduling. The SEC schedules more cupcakes than ANY other conference. You want to know why so many SEC teams made bowl games? They all went 4-0 out of conference against easy teams.
Taking a look at the 4 teams that went 7-5 with 4 non-con wins.
Arkansas- Missouri State, Troy, Texas A&M, Eastern Michigan
South Carolina- NC State, Florida Atlantic, South Carolina State, Clemson
Kentucky- Miami (OH), Louisville, LA-Monroe, Eastern Kentucky
Auburn- LA Tech, West Virginia, Ball State, Furham

They played 5 BCS teams and 4 FCS teams between them! Each was tested only once and that is a joke.

And no, I wasn't good enough to play for an SEC team. I wasn't even good enough to play for a BCS team (unless it was Washington State or Baylor prob), but even if I was, I would never have gone to a SEC school.

2010 non-conference grades for SEC and Pac 10 (only two I could find)
Alabama: B-
Auburn: D
Arkansas: C
Georgia: B-
Florida: B
Mississippi: D+
Mississippi State: D+
LSU: B
South Carolina: C-
Tennessee: B-
Kentucky: F
Vanderbilt: A+
Overal GPA: 2.06
BCS Games: 16 (10 home, 6 road)
FBC Games: 10 (83% of teams)

Arizona: C-
Arizona State: C+
Cal: D
Stanford: B
Oregon: C+
Oregon State: A
USC: A
UCLA: A+
Washington: A
Washington State: C
Overall GPA: 2.86
BCS Games: 17 (9 home, 8 road)
FCS Games: 6 (60% of teams)

SEC is much improved (except for a few horrible teams), but still a ways to go; like playing road BCS games.

Another interesting note, 6 SEC teams scheduled a bye week before Bama.

Wow, you sure do invest alot of time and thought to something you certainly seem to dislike! :confused3

I agree with most of the PP's on the things mentioned on this thread:

1. UT is better off without Kiffin.
2. Not all UT fans are "classless". Don't paint the entire fanbase with a broad
brush. (From an LSU fan  )
3. It is very possible to be a die-hard fan of one school but root for another if
your team is not playing.
4. LSU fans, like UT fans, dislike their former coaches for the way they left,
not for taking a better job.

One other thing: Uuaww, you did not see this LSU fan celebrating when Alabama won the NC!

I went to Indiana...so we are the cupcake on most schedules...and the SEC type of preconference games is the only kind IU usually wins.

And, you do know that Va Tech isn't in the Big 10 right??

And as was mentioned before by someone...conference love is more of an SEC thing. Most big 10 schools don't root for each other to win.

Of course i know Va Tech is in the ACC, i was just pointing out Bama's out of conference opponents. But i do agree about not rooting for a conference to a degree but i think it's because i grew up in the northeast and we are taught to hate the Eagles, Islanders, Braves, etc. I will root for Ole Miss, Miss St., and a few others but not other teams in certain cases.

I didn't root for FLA in NC either time but did want them to kill Cincy this year to show how much better the SEC is than the Big East

I was at the game last week and when the bama fans all started chanting "S-E-C" at the end of the game i didn't- i think it's all about where you are raised

With all due respect... bullfeathers! Just about everyone who went to school in the SEC knows the rule: you pull for your team when your team is competing, but when your team is not in the field, you pull for the SEC team that is. It's conference loyalty. While there are some mouth-breathing exceptions, most alumni are big enough not to begrudge another SEC team good wishes when our own team is no longer in the running.

DH (whose school is in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and didn't have a football team) thinks it's interesting that I do this, but I've never known any other alum of an SEC D-1 school that did not. (Of course, I've also been known to watch a game between two of our SEC rivals and root for the one whose victory will give my own school better standing in that week's polls! ;))

And for you folks at Tennessee, my sympathies about the betrayal. LSU fans know the feeling well. (see Saban, Nick.)
Uuuaw hates the SEC. He'll come back and deny, deny, deny, but his past posts prove it. He also dislikes southerners, particularly those educated at "state" schools.

I'm sure he's still smarting over the SEC winning the National Championship yet again :).

It's asinine to think one shouldn't root for other teams in their home team's conference. It really hurt to cheer for Bama in the National Championship game but we did (ok I didn't really cheer for them but kinda sorta hoped they'd win...my husband and son cheered enough for me).

My 8 year old son had a bit of difficulty understanding this concept too, but you have a few years on him. It's quite simple, really. I'm a die hard LSU fan. I also like Florida. Florida is our yearly matchup between SEC east/west. Of course I won't root for Florida to beat us, but typically I cheer for them to win. If, however, their losing helps LSU then I will root against them. I root for my team first. Same deal with Ole Miss. My family (parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles) are die hard Ole Miss fans. There was a time I loved them as much as LSU. That time has passed. I still like them, but would never root for them if it hurts LSU. Get it?

I feel bad for the situation Tennessee is left in, but Lane Kiffin is an *** of the highest order. Since I'm not a fan of USC, I'm happy for them to have him.

You like the Cal Bears and you went to Cal Poly, am I right? If not give me a few minutes...

I hadn't even finished reading the thread before my first post but I see you're already proven me right. Yawn. Your SEC rants are getting tiresome.

We watch tons of football games outside our conference. My 8 year old son is a die-hard LSU fan, with 2 die hard LSU parents (and grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends...), yet he loves your Cal Bears, Boise State, Oregon, and several other non-SEC teams. He could probably outdo you in the stats you post. He eat, lives and breathes football. He will watch a 10 year old game on ESPN Classics just to have a football game to watch, and many times we've watched schools whose stadiums look like they might hold all of 100 people (definitely not SEC ;)).

ETA:
I AM NOT A MIAMI FAN!!!! I JUST DON'T LIKE THE SEC, I am a Cal fan, and a fan of the Pac 10.

Oh and im still in college, in my 2nd year at cal poly: san luis obispo. and just for kicks, Im a biology major with an emphasis in botany.

Oh and Lilygator, funniest. post. ever.

you are NO diehard fan of anything other than what you were not chosen as.

you know, please let the SEC go. We all know you were a kicker for a NON SEC team, which has obviously left you burning up on an island who chooses to only show SEC games and, from your posts, only horrific SEC fans come spend money and stay on that island and cause you grief.

You are not a DIEHARD of any team other than ANY team from the SEC since you couldn't play for them.

Uuuaw, you're probably a really nice guy but you are like a rabid dog when you talk about the SEC. Tone it down and you'll probably find many people willing to debate your views.

I was ignorant about the state school view, agree with that one 100%, back then I just legitimately didn't know. If you take what I said about it in California, then California state schools are much lower academically (for the most part) then University of California schools. I'm not going to argue academics again, don't know enough.

FYI, I dislike Boise State much much much more than any SEC team.

Finally, my offers/visits were amazingly from Colorado State, UAB and So. Miss; 2 schools in the South (would have gone to Colorado State though)... and I was a punter, not a kicker.

And most of those posts are from 2005! wow I've been here a long time haha.
