SEC Fans, Lane Kiffin going to USC

Um, how are there SEC fans? I understand rooting for the SEC teams in the NC or bowl season in general. But this is rediculous. You are not fans of a conferece! don't you have a team? If anyone claims to be fans of a conference then they aren't a fan of a team. That's the same as having 3-4 favorite teams. You have the team you grew up with and your alma mater if it applies. THAT'S IT.

Oh and classy messages from the Tennessee fans on the wall on campus. Or should I say SEC fans? Then it encompasses everyone.

Why can't we be fans of a conference? It's the most competitve and hard fought conference in all of college football, just like some NFL divisions have major rivalries and tough games, it makes watching the games more exciting. There's a lot of rivalries but a lot of respect as well.

Plus, it's the southeastern U.S., football is like a religion to much of the fans.

Lane Kiffin started to make me lose respect for UT, especially since I thought Phil Fulmer was a very good, respectable coach and much classier than Kiffin ever will be.

You can, but then don't ever claim to be a diehard fan of any team. I am sick of seeing Florida and LSU fans celebrating because Alabama won the national championship. That is the defintion of the term bandwagoner in sports.

And why shouldn't Kiffin leave Tennessee? Everyone there has hated him from day one and all everyone did was talk trash on the guy and you are surprised when he leaves?

I am a FL fan and a fan of the SEC. I will root for a SEC conference team over any other conference team. It doesn't make sense for people to say you can't be a fan of a conference.

I think fans now are seeing what others have said about Kiffin since he came, before this abrupt resignation, his behavior was excusable... now, they're seeing it without the rose colored glasses.

The campus shenigans were more than "just a few students"... the crowd was estimated at between 500 - 1000 people - burning a mattress, shirts, and the graffiti on the rock including his home address and phone number (and his wife's cell # as well). He was taken home by Campus police and the Knoxville police department stationed officers outside their home all night Tuesday night.

UT fans should be embarrassed by their fellow fans' actions. Sorry if you are a fan and are offended, but that's my (and countless others) opinion.

There are more than 500 - 1,000 students living on UT's campus and I do not know of one mature adult fan/person that ran straight down there to raise some HE**. It was students from what I could tell, since most of the dorms are right along that stretch of road where they were showing their behinds. That would make sense. Also, it's students that write on the rock. Let's see how your UF students would act in a similar situation. Not very different I would just about bet.

P.S. Saw pictures of the rock and didn't notice their addy or phone numbers, but again, i wasn't looking. Not like I was going to call the man or his wife. And no, I do not agree with the nastiness they wrote there. Classless indeed.

Sorry...but I still have to think your first post, as well as this one, imply that all Tennessee fans are classless.

No one is disputing that the 1000 or so students (which is still just a small percentage of ALL of the UT fans) behaved badly. What they did was uncalled for and immature.

And many of us thought LK's behavior was not good before he resigned. All of the NCAA violations, and not being able to be gracious to other teams...that did not go well over here.

I just think bashing all the TN fans over this is unfair.

With all due respect... bullfeathers! Just about everyone who went to school in the SEC knows the rule: you pull for your team when your team is competing, but when your team is not in the field, you pull for the SEC team that is. It's conference loyalty. While there are some mouth-breathing exceptions, most alumni are big enough not to begrudge another SEC team good wishes when our own team is no longer in the running.

DH (whose school is in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and didn't have a football team) thinks it's interesting that I do this, but I've never known any other alum of an SEC D-1 school that did not. (Of course, I've also been known to watch a game between two of our SEC rivals and root for the one whose victory will give my own school better standing in that week's polls! ;))

And for you folks at Tennessee, my sympathies about the betrayal. LSU fans know the feeling well. (see Saban, Nick.)

I tried to feel bad for Tennessee, but after all the smack from their fans when basketball coach "Slick" Calipari left Memphis and took all our recruits and left us with a big slap from the NCAA, all I can think to say is "KARMA".

I don't think some ut student would have Lane Kiffin or his wifes cell phone #.

Exactly! There's nothing like SEC football. I can't stand to watch the other conferences....even when the Gators aren't on, I go through all the games, trying to find the INTERESTING SEC one.

Even my DH, who grew up with Big 10 football, only likes to watch SEC football now.

even when they are playing their usual run of cupcake nobody schools that most of them play in their non-conference schedule which this year included 11 of 48 games against 1-AA teams.

Good riddance! Glad to get that classless Kiffin out of the SEC. Now, can he take Nick Saban with him?

Roll Tide! Don't be a hater. And for sour grapes from Indiana in the post above I am assuming you are a Big Ten fan. Bama beat Va Tech this year out of conference and is going to whoop Penn St in week 2 next year. Please disclose your conference rooting interests so we can see dissect their schedules

you are NO diehard fan of anything other than what you were not chosen as.

you know, please let the SEC go. We all know you were a kicker for a NON SEC team, which has obviously left you burning up on an island who chooses to only show SEC games and, from your posts, only horrific SEC fans come spend money and stay on that island and cause you grief.

You are not a DIEHARD of any team other than ANY team from the SEC since you couldn't play for them.

No other conference has fans that feel such a sense of entitlement then the SEC. People saying, "oh I only watch SEC footbal" everything else is boring. That is BS and everyone knows it. I mean come on, of course everyone wanted to see Florida vs. Troy this last year  I have never said that the SEC isn't a great conference, it is. The last few years, they have proven to be the best at the top. However, watching Big 12 or Pac 10 football is just as great depending on the matchup. No logical fan was watching Florida vs. Troy over USC vs. Ohio State last year.

My beef with the SEC comes down to two things:
1. How top heavy the conference is. The good teams are really good, but they drop-off after that.
2. The scheduling. The SEC schedules more cupcakes than ANY other conference. You want to know why so many SEC teams made bowl games? They all went 4-0 out of conference against easy teams.
Taking a look at the 4 teams that went 7-5 with 4 non-con wins.
Arkansas- Missouri State, Troy, Texas A&M, Eastern Michigan
South Carolina- NC State, Florida Atlantic, South Carolina State, Clemson
Kentucky- Miami (OH), Louisville, LA-Monroe, Eastern Kentucky
Auburn- LA Tech, West Virginia, Ball State, Furham

They played 5 BCS teams and 4 FCS teams between them! Each was tested only once and that is a joke.

And no, I wasn't good enough to play for an SEC team. I wasn't even good enough to play for a BCS team (unless it was Washington State or Baylor prob), but even if I was, I would never have gone to a SEC school.

2010 non-conference grades for SEC and Pac 10 (only two I could find)
Alabama: B-
Auburn: D
Arkansas: C
Georgia: B-
Florida: B
Mississippi: D+
Mississippi State: D+
LSU: B
South Carolina: C-
Tennessee: B-
Kentucky: F
Vanderbilt: A+
Overal GPA: 2.06
BCS Games: 16 (10 home, 6 road)
FBC Games: 10 (83% of teams)

Arizona: C-
Arizona State: C+
Cal: D
Stanford: B
Oregon: C+
Oregon State: A
USC: A
UCLA: A+
Washington: A
Washington State: C
Overall GPA: 2.86
BCS Games: 17 (9 home, 8 road)
FCS Games: 6 (60% of teams)

SEC is much improved (except for a few horrible teams), but still a ways to go; like playing road BCS games.

Another interesting note, 6 SEC teams scheduled a bye week before Bama.

Just to make sure I have the "laws" correct---it is completely impossible to be a true fan of any team if you also support the conference. However, blanket hatred of an entire conference is fine. :confused3

I don't hate the SEC, I hate the practices of the SEC. I actually enjoy watching Tennessee and South Carolina play. But if you're an Auburn fan, you rooting for Alabama in the NC is silly. That is your rival.

Exactly! :thumbsup2:thumbsup2

BTW, I want to clarify that I am a football fan. I prefer to watch SEC games because I am from the SEC, SEC school. I am now living in NC, but the SEC football is what I grew up with. I prefer to watch them. I do still watch other teams and enjoy their games too. I love watching Texas play, OU, and even App State. SEC is my favorite college football to watch, but I enjoy watching other games too. I see nothing wrong with preferring to watch SEC.

I like Alabama. It's Nick Saban I can't stand. I think he's a mercenary.

I went to Indiana...so we are the cupcake on most schedules...and the SEC type of preconference games is the only kind IU usually wins.

And, you do know that Va Tech isn't in the Big 10 right??

And as was mentioned before by someone...conference love is more of an SEC thing. Most big 10 schools don't root for each other to win.
