When the Space Needle was built in 1962 it was the tallest building west of the Mississippi River. The pictures from the World's Fair are that much more impressive given the extra view that wasn't blocked by dozens of taller buildings.
And of course it doesn't help that the show Frasier placed the Needle in the Downtown area and made it taller.
Great pics Jules, glad you had a good time. The number of homeless in that area looks worse because of the tourists. Since the tourist area is so small (about 8 blocks square) their grouping makes it look worse than it really is.
