Can anyone please help us with the seating on Space Mountain. My DH and I are fighting over this. My DS wants to go on it this Feb. 2005 and he is 8. I was reading that the seating is single file and there is one person per car. My DH who hasn't been on it for 18 yrs says they are single file but my son can sit in front of him and there not in separate cars. My son wants to go on it but doesn't want to sit alone!

Any one who has been on it recently, the answer would help alot.

Sorry my husband said my son can sit between his legs in front of him. Forgot to add this in.

Your husband is partially correct. It's two people per car, one in front of the other but it seems to me like you each have your own seat.

Don't worry... your son will not have to ride alone. You can choose to sit with someone in front or behind him, as the cars are single file. No one will be next to him though.

Years ago, I forget when, the cars were a bench seat where a child could sit in front of an adult. My little brother used to hate this cause I would always scream right in his ear.

They put in new cars several years ago like the other poster said, where each car holds 3 riders each in their own seat with a bar that comes down low. I've never seen anyone sit with a child in the same seat in these cars; not sure it's possible

They'll be in the same car, but I don't think they can both be in the same seat.

Space Mtn. was our son's favorite ride--and at the time he was 5 1/2! He wanted to ride in the front too (both times!) There are 2 cars connected consiting of 3 single file seats. Everyone gets their own seat (no sitting between legs like the olden days) If I find my picture, I'll post it for you!

Each person sits in their own seat with a pull down lap T-bar. It is a single file seating arrangement with 3 people per car and two cars attached together for a total of 6 riders per train.

The picture in the link below is not perfect, but will give you an idea. A person cannot sit in anyone's lap or directly in front of someone where they are 'touching'.

Hope this helps!

My DD first rode it at age 6. I was very nervous as I couldn't sit next to her. I leaned forward the whole time and kept my hands on her shoulders. I told her it was so she would know I was right behind her, but honestly, it was more so I would know she was still there. :) When we got off, she immediately turned around and said, "I want to ride it again, but this time, don't touch me, Mom!" We've ridden it several times since then, and she still loves it, but I still have to really suppress the urge to reach out and touch her shoulders.

Cool pictures Maverick. Wish I had taken more pictures on my first trip in '86. Who knew, huh?

From one over protective mother to another, let him ride with dad, if he wants, but don't ride with them. This is a lesson I had to learn on my own, at the expense of my frayed nerves. I'll not elaborate, because I want the poor kid to get to ride. :p

IMHO the new cars for SM killed the enjoyment for me. When we were there 2 years ago they still had the ones where I could sit with my son. Now it's more of a detached feeling, it's less like you're having fun with someone and more like you're riding a thrill ride by you're self (which takes most of the thrill out of it). In other words it's not a "family" ride anymore but a common thrill ride (still a really nice well themed trhill ride but...)

Word of warning...do not let small people sit in the back seat of the car! I'm 4 foot 11 inches. For some reason the back seat has a lot more leg room. I could not anchor myself to the seat since my feet didn't touch the foot board. My friend who is 5 foot 3 inches refused to sit in the back. So I did. Now I understand why. On the other hand, if you have long legs...I strongly suggest the back seat.

We just rode SM last week with our almost 5yo and he loved it.... the car has 3 seats sitting in a single row and we put ds in the middle between dh and I (the 10yo was behind us in the front of the next car and was fine) I was able to reach forward enough from the back to hold onto the little guy's shirt and he was fine.... loved it so much we rode 3 times!!lol

I like our California version better as we sit side by side. Then again I like WDW's splash mountain better than ours because, once again, you can sit side by side. Being close to your family always seems to make the rides more enjoyable.:)

When we rode, I sat in the front seat, DD in the middle, and DH in the back. She held her hands up and he was able to hold them. She felt comfortable in between us. I think he will be ok. Just let him know you are there. Having a parent be in touch helps.

As an interesting side note to this thread...the seating arrangements are opposite at Disneyland vs. WDW...for example Splash Mountain at Disneyland sits single file, but you sit side-by-side at WDW. Space Mountain is opposite...at Disneyland you sit side-by-side, and WDW is single file....just an interesting little factoid. :p

Edit: Sorry...I didn't see the post above describing this exact thing before I posted...I am a nerd.

I thought I was the only one who sits behind their child so I can 'reach out and touch' them!!! My dd, 11, also told me to knock it off!!!
Thanks for the insight into the back seat. I have always sat there, with dd in the middle and dh, 6'4" in the front seat!!! Looks like we'll be switching spots in Nov.!!! He always had his knees up around his chin. Now I know why!!
