Looking for some advice. Our grandson will be 19months when we go to Florida in September 2013. I have never travelled with an infant before and the more that we all thought about it the more we thought that it would make sense to buy him a seat on the airplane.

I called Travel City Direct yesterday to get a price (fly with Virgin) and they came back with £307.78. Now I don't know if this is a good price or not, what do you all think? Would it make sense to leave it just now and price near the time of departure or should I snap it up?

Fiona.:confused3

Sounds good to me - however we didn't buy a seat for DD at same age and she was fine on our knee, they gave us bulk head seat with extra legroom and it wasn't a problem.

I'm taking an infant for the first time too in a few weeks and have chosen not to get a seat.

He'll only spend most of the flight on our knee anyway and he wouldn't sleep on a seat, he'd only sleep lying down or on us so it would be a complete waste of money for us.

We havent booked a seat for DD who will be 23 months old we have requested a cot though so you are meant to be given extra leg room seats like mentioned above. Personally that extra money would be much better spent on souvenirs :D

Thanks for all your replies. My daughter felt the same, there will be 5 adults travelling so he has lots of knees to sit on, I am just a worrier, and not the best flyer so wanted to try and make the journey as easy as possible. Will probably leave it just now, and see if we can get a bulk head seat for my daughter and son n law and the wee one nearer the time.

Once again - thanks guys.:goodvibes

We took the twins at 23 months with no seats, this year they are over two and our flight was 374 each for them

You can only have a sky cot up to 12 months old as there is a weight limit on them. Also there is no way that a 2 year old will physically fit in them. They may give you seats with extra legroom tho.

Have to disagree with you there, we had a sky cot last year for the girls and one fit in there and she was 23 months. Ok she is a little small for her age but still over the weight threshold and no problems requesting one and nothing said when she fell asleep in it

I was told that under 24months with out a seat automatically get asked for them. she weighs 18 lb at 18 months she is very small for her age and still get told she doesn't look big enough to be walking!

Ok point taken - my 5 months old son weighs 18lbs and he is on the 50th centile - so she is obviously petite. It's just all the sites I have ever looked on always state they can only have a cot up to a year. No way would DD have fit in one when we took her at 20 months and she is average height and build.

Yeah she is a tiddler! Lol! She's 0.4 percentile :) I'm only 5ft and DH is 5ft 5 so not much chance her being a giant lol

Obviously it depends on other babies on the flight if we get one. I guess under ones have priority xxx

I took my daughter 18 months on virgin I wasn't allowed a sky cot as she was to big but they did give me extra leg room and she also used seat next to us as we had loads of empty ones so you never no might not be full

Got this off virgin site

1) To help those passengers who are travelling with babies the airline offers baby changing facilities on all aircraft and provides sky cots for infants under one year old for the baby to sleep in during the flight. Passengers can reserve a sky cot when they book their flight.

That's strange Virgin asked me if I wanted it and obviously they knew her exact age. Oh well if we don't get one I don't mind would of been nice but I doubt she will sleep on me was the only reason i said yes to having one. She is definitely not a cuddler x

I think it depends who you talk to. We were told definitely no over 12months on our 1st flight but was told up tp 24 months on our 2nd flight.

There is a weight limit but I thought I read it was about 20lbs - might be wrong though.

I didn't pay that much attention as my daughter barely fit in it at 5 months (50th centile) and so we never used it again.
