I guess it is too early to start applying for seasonal retail jobs? Just thinking ahead.

A bit early but soon the signs will start appearing on windows :thumbsup2

Around here they start looking for people in late Oct but I think we do it later since Oct is super dead for us. Our ski season starts Thanksgiving week and we do not stop until April so everyone is going on vaction in Oct.

I work part time at Toys/Babies R Us and we start hiring for season in September...the people who are hired in October are usually let go on Christmas Eve, but those hired in September are regular and generally stay on after the holidays.

I work in retail and we are starting to interview and hire for the holidays now. The goal is to get enough people hired and trained so things are running smoothly before black friday. I would definitely start inquiring now-you will probably start hearing more after Labor day.

I don't think there's any rule as to when companies start. It depends on what kind of help it is, and how long it takes to train. I was hired in November for both seasonal jobs I had, but they required like 1 day of training. Just keep looking, I'm sure craigslist will be full of stuff within the next couple months. In the meantime, if you live in a large enough area, you might have one of those pop up halloween stores, or Party City usually does a lot of hiring for Halloween. You could try those and then look for something else closer to xmas.

I saw online holiday employment ads for Macy's (a department store) just this past week.

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but just looking for advice from people who hire for/have worked a seasonal job as a 2nd job.

I know it probably depends a bit on management, but does anyone know which national stores tend to be most flexible in the scheduling of their temp workers? I'm considering a seasonal job for the holidays but my primary job requires weekend availability, but it can be minimal (just mornings), and weekdays get kinda dead for us. So I'm hoping to be able to offer weekdays and weekend early afternoon-nights and still be considered.

Thanks for any input!!

The company I work is very good about flexible scheduling, but part of that comes from maintaining a staff throughout the year, we don't do seasonal hiring. In my experience the companies and stores that DO do seasonal hiring are basically at liberty to say "This is when we want you, so take it or leave it." People are always looking for a job nowadays and if you don't match whats being asked, they'll find someone who will you know? A company will always hire whoever fits the need in the best way, like Person A might have tons of experience but is only available 4 days a week at certain times and Person B might not have a ton of experience but I think I can train them and they have great availability, therefore I'm obviously going to hire Person B. You really have to look at it from the business's standpoint. I see lots of young kids (at the ripe old age of 26) that think "Oh if the job really wants me they'll work around what I give them" and I just want to :lmao::lmao::lmao::rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

So PP, if you decide to apply, I'd make sure your primary job knows, and to make certain they aren't going to suddenly need you at different times. Offer an availability to the second job that you know 100% you can do, and if it should happen that you're available at additional times, you can let them know on a case by case basis. Don't go into it saying "Well I'll probably be able to work Wednesdays, it depends though" or something like that.

I don't know if it helps but if you want something soon the spirit halloween stores that will be opening soon have signs up they are hiring they are usually open sept/oct. I would imagine any of the others would too cant think of the names of the others right now.

i think the website for applying was work4spirit.com ! I thought that would be a fun place becuase you can dress up like halloween :)

I know my kohls was fine with weekend afternoon/eves aval. Their one big thing is weekends aval. didn't matter times.

LockShockBarrel and Fire14, I just wanted to say thank you very much for your advice and input! My job does know I might get a 2nd job, so I would be giving them an availability change, potentials icing potential jobs just what I can work. Thanks again. :)
