We are leaving Saturday for our 7 day cruise! Iam sooooo excited! But...I am getting a litle nervous after reading about rough seas and people getting seaick. I went on a three day Disney cruise last summer, and aside from feeling the motion of the ship occasionally, I was not sick at all. It seems that those talking about motion sickness are on the longer cruises. I hate to take medication if I don't have to. Everyone who reads/writes on these message boards is so helpful, so I was wondering if anyone out there knows if the chances of getting sick increase because you are out sea longer. (other than the fact you have more opportunity) I have bought the wristbands and meds, but I would prefer not to take them. Oh...and it I wait to take the meds will it even work after the fact?

Thank you so much for your help!!

From a person who does get seasick on a 4 day cruise. I don't think the lenght of the cruise has too much to do with it. The worse part of it for me is going through the gulf stream. This happens at the beginning and end of each cruise. I was actually able to quit taking medication after the first two days and enjoyed the remainder of the cruise with out drugs.

As a Navy veteran, I can tell you that if you think too much about it, you WILL get seasick.

Focus on all the things there are to enjoy on the cruise, avoid eating and drinking anything that might normally upset your stomach (greasy foods, too much alcohol), and get enough fresh air, especially if you start feeling "close" below deck.

Last, but not least, if the sea gets rough and someone near you is getting sick, walk away. There is no quicker way to get sick than observing someone else being sick.

Enjoy your cruise :)

Thank you, George! I knew I could count on help from the readers of this board!

We didn't get sick on our cruise. But I got the spins while going thru the gulf stream on our first night. My dh got the spins on the 3rd night. He also got the spins the day after getting home. Go figure. As I said.. nobody felt sick.. but we just felt like we had had way too much to drink.. and only on those days mentioned. Our 9 year old son felt nothing at all. I did hear, however.. that lots of people got a little ill during the first night thru the gulf.

:)

I am glad that lots of people have similar experience and not in the minority.

In the family, I am the one that was most concern with seasickness. Howver on the first night out, crossing the Gluf stream, the whole family felt a little sick, nothing bad or anything. Then once the ship stopped, after dinner that night to be exact, we were all fine for the rest of the trip.

About the meds; I plan on taking Bonine with us on our 4 night cruise, but when should you first take one? How do you know when to quit if you're still at sea? My girls, ages 8 and 6-will they be able to take 1/2 pill?

I was very concerned last year after reading the board about the first night out. I took 1 Bonine before bed Fri. night, and then another about an hour after boarding the ship, so it could get into my system before we set sail. No problems, have fun wish I were going.
