Hi!

I 99% sure that the machine with a Sears label use to be made by Singer. A call to Singer might reveal if this is still true.

Good Luck

I do not have a particular model in mind. I finally found a site last night that states Sears sewing machines are manufacturered by a different Asian company each year. :( I was thinking of a White 2999. So please tell me what you have and what you like and don't like about it. It's been 30+ years since I got a new machine and boy have they changed!

DH bought me a Kenmore 8 years ago. I love it. All the parts inside are metal, which is rare to find from what I hear. Sears was wonderful about cleaning it for free during the first 3 years. I haven't had any problems with it since I have had it. I don't know the model exactly, but I know it is very user friendly.

You might see if there's a nice sewing maching shop in your town and go see what they have. If nothing else, they are very well informed and you would be amazed at the machines available now. They usually carry good brands and some even sell used machines. There are a lot of people seriously into sewing who like to trade up to get the latest new machines. I would consider getting a nicer used machine with more functions. They sure do make life easier. :)

I have 3 Janomes. I got my first one several years ago. I wanted to try a little embroidery so I got a used machine that does computerized sewing and embriodery. It's a great machine. Last year when I started making dance costumes, it had to go in the shop for a minor repair, and we decided I needed a backup machine.

I was going to get something simple, but with the volume of work I do, we decided to get a nice computerized machine for my main sewing and save the other one for embroidery work and as a backup machine. I tell you, the computerized machines do make life easier. The only thing it doesn't have, that I wish it did, is an automatic thread cutter. Depending on what I'm doing, I can spend as much time clipping threads as I do sewing. I decided to go with a Janome again, because I liked my first one so much and the functions and controls were so similar. I wouldn't have any trouble switching back and forth between machines.

I eventually got an inexpensive manual Janome to take to dance competitions for emergency repairs. I didn't want to take a chance of my good machines getting damaged or stolen. I've also lent it out to friends. It's a fine little basic machine, but I've gotten spoiled with my computerized ones so I rarely use it.

What would you suggest for a beginner? I would like something to make some very simple curtains. Basicly 4 seems and a rod pocket. Then to use for simple repairs here at home. I do not intend to actually make clothing so I don't want to spend a lot, I have looked at Walmart and Target both have a machine for about $100. :teeth:

I just started sewing last year, after I asked for a sewing machine for my birthday. I got the singer model 132q, it's got a small table for quilting that comes with it. It's a very easy machine to learn with and start out with, Since i got it i've made many handbags and a tanktop, and pillows and a small basic quilt. I liked it so much that i told my mom to buy one for my sister for christmas this year (she asked for a sewing machine). Here's a link, they're selling them on amazon for about $120 (and it comes w/ free shipping). The singer sight seems to be of little use right now. My mother has a brother machine that she likes also, i'm not sure which model. here's the link to my singer:

singer 132Q

hope this helps. :)
