You might see if there's a nice sewing maching shop in your town and go see what they have. If nothing else, they are very well informed and you would be amazed at the machines available now. They usually carry good brands and some even sell used machines. There are a lot of people seriously into sewing who like to trade up to get the latest new machines. I would consider getting a nicer used machine with more functions. They sure do make life easier.
I have 3 Janomes. I got my first one several years ago. I wanted to try a little embroidery so I got a used machine that does computerized sewing and embriodery. It's a great machine. Last year when I started making dance costumes, it had to go in the shop for a minor repair, and we decided I needed a backup machine.
I was going to get something simple, but with the volume of work I do, we decided to get a nice computerized machine for my main sewing and save the other one for embroidery work and as a backup machine. I tell you, the computerized machines do make life easier. The only thing it doesn't have, that I wish it did, is an automatic thread cutter. Depending on what I'm doing, I can spend as much time clipping threads as I do sewing. I decided to go with a Janome again, because I liked my first one so much and the functions and controls were so similar. I wouldn't have any trouble switching back and forth between machines.
I eventually got an inexpensive manual Janome to take to dance competitions for emergency repairs. I didn't want to take a chance of my good machines getting damaged or stolen. I've also lent it out to friends. It's a fine little basic machine, but I've gotten spoiled with my computerized ones so I rarely use it.
