Sealing a deck.... what to use?

I have been trying to find a time when the search function was up and running, but I am not having any luck!

A couple of months ago there was a thread that talked about sealing decks with something better than Thompson's Water Seal.

I wrote down the names of two products that people recommended.... but now I have misplaced my note!

Can anyone help me out?

I have always used Thompson's but I am thinking if you go to a site like Lowes or Home Depot you may be able to find it. Sorry couldn't help you more.

Ok if you want the best protection you can use a stain that is not transparent.. The thing is , it covers the wood almost like a paint.. you will not see any grain. The non transparent stain will protect the wood from the Sun rays, and mildew, the best.

The second best is semi transparent stain.. you can see some graain but you will have to seal the deck every two years.

The last thing you want to do is use Thompson water seal.. it will just start to erode off in a few months... do not use it.

Yes, We too were told ( by people at Lowes ) not to use Thompson's Water Seal . They suggested Olympic Maximum . Thats what we got and I love it , We chose Cedar Naturaltone . And it was very easy, We worried about messing it up for months, but when we finally did it we were thrilled with the results !

We use Cabots Solid Deck Stain.

My contractor suggested I use Behr - it's more expensive but worth it according to him. I haven't done it yet but will do so when the weather cools off a bit.
