Sea Sickness Poll

I agree with tezb. I too have a problem sitting near the window in the dining rooms. There is something about seeing that movement while I am eating that does not work for me. However, if I am out on deck eating, it does not bother me. Also, I got sick on the larger ship than I did on the smaller one. I mean, I was sick as a dawg:( Also on this ship I had a large balcony suite, when I had an inside cabin on the smaller ship, so go figure! Each day is different, because the calmness of the water is unpredictable from one day to the next.

I get motion sick very easily and always have. We have our 14th cruise planned for May and I still love to go. I like others on here start taking my Bonine about 3-4 days before we leave. I get sick on airplanes as well so it works out good. We always arrive the day before the ship is due to leave so we can get a good nights rest without having to travel all day (not to mention it is almost impossible to get to Florida and hit a ship from Utah on the same day) so we go down the day before, relax and get ready to go. Once on the ship we take a Bonine faithfully every morning before we do anything else and we have a great time all day and all night. We took things for our children like Benadryl but only our 9 year old needed anything. The apples work really good if you are queasy but the best thing to do is not get sick to begin with. If you know you are sensitive to motion take something before you get sick because if you get sick and then take it it takes too long to work. Also no matter what you decide to take (if it is a medication) make sure to try it at home before you leave days before you are set to go so you make sure of the side effects. I used the patch and had terrible side effects that ruined 1/2 my cruise one year. If I had tried it at home I would have known it wasnt for me and moved to something else like Bonine. I noticed that when we were busy doing something fun I never noticed the motion but once there was a lull in the action or we were snoozing or something I could really feel it.

Another Bonine user here. I tried SeaBands, which were fine in moderate seas and during a flight, but out on the ocean, when big rollers occured, they didn't work for me. :( One Bonine every 24 hours takes care of my seasickness. :)

I'm one of those who gets very motion sick - I take Dramamine EVERY day that I go to any theme park - love those roller coasters and am not going to let my motion sickness get the better of me. I also take my Dramamine before boarding the ship (I can feel it move way up and way way down even while we are still tied up a Port Canaveral!). I continue to take it every day we throughout the cruise and for a few days afterwards. I feel the movement of the ship MORE after the cruise is done than during it. :confused:

Points worth repeating:
->Check with your doctor.
->Try your sea sickness meds at home LONG before leaving for the cruise to see if the side effects are worse than the motion sickness (not hardly possible), so you can adjust dosage / medicine before leaving. This goes for any herbal remidies too - I would consider them drugs at this point.
->If you are going to use Sea Bands (I don't know how you would test their effectiveness before leaving) make sure you pack them where you can get them the first day
->Sea bands are sold on the ship - but you have to wait until you leave port before the stores open up

Have fun

BTW - My PC started rocking just while responding to this thread - talk about "mind over matter" :o

I too am a person who has to sit in the front of cars so I can see where we are going. I spent many a sick afternoon by the side of the highway as a child, after time spent riding in the back of our car on long trips to see relatives.

I have never gotten sick on a boat, not small pleasure craft or larger ones like the Circle Line in NY. But I went prepared with dramamine last summer because my DD gets seasick. She began taking it before we even got aboard! DH, DS and I hung over the railings as the ship sped off. DD stayed near the walls at first, but soon found that the dramamine was working GREAT!

Well, funny thing was, on the second night of the cruise, as we were walking to dinner, I began to feel funny. We were walking along deck 3 I think, along those big windows between Parrot Cay and Tritons. As I was looking out I noticed I was walking against traffic so to speak -- the ship was going one way and I was walking the opposite way. A deep pain in my stomach and nausea swept over me. It was like no car sickness I ever felt. I stopped and sat down to rest awhile. It only got worse, so I ran back to the cabin and popped some of those dramamines. Within 10 minutes I was all better!

Needless to say, last week aboard the Wonder for the second time, I was well prepared with my dramamine supply. I began taking it right away because if you have ever experienced sea sickness, you would do anything to avoid it. (it made me a little sleepy, but not so much as to not enjoy the trip)

Have a wonderful time!

Friends who were regular "cruisers" had recommended ginger pills to my daughter the first time she sailed on the Wonder in April. She said they worked like a charm, there was only one time her stomach "didn't feel just right," but she never got sick. I'm planning on going the ginger pill route, because I don't think I'd want to drink anything alcoholic while being on any other seasick remedy.:smooth:

I do get seasick and I was very worried. I took every imaginable cure with me. I took meclizine the first day or 2 because I was a little lightheaded - but not nauseaus. After that I couldn't even tell the ship was moving.
