SE-270D Embroidery Machine

I bought an SE-270D embroidery machine in June to embroider names on ribbon for hairbows.
I got really frustrated with it and quit trying until about a week ago and I'm trying to embroider again.
I was hoping someone in the group could give me some much needed guidance. I have all the instructions that go with it...but apparently I'm too think headed to understand what to do with them! LOL
I need to know how to make my embroidery start where I put the needle down. AND also how do I know if the embroidery will start at the top or bottom of the letter?
Any help will be very much appreciated.
