SDL Opening Day - I'm In!

I hope so! I'll still have to do the offsite/onsite transfer on my own though. I just hope the SDL Hotel is going to open nice and early so I can get all the formalities out of the way and still get to the gates nice and early.

I'm really having trouble deciding what I should do on my arrival night. I've come up with 3 options that could work ok.

Option 1: Keep things simple and stay at an airport hotel that night. Pros - many hotels offer a free airport shuttle, quick and easy to get to. Cons - still about half an hour away from SDL, and I'd have to get a taxi in the morning, many of the better airport hotels are pretty expensive.

Option 2: Find a decent looking hotel right at a convenient metro station. Pros - relatively easy to get to from the airport on the Maglev and MTR, better value than airport hotels. Cons - no closer to SDL by taxi, could be a long and complicated journey by train.

Option 3: I've found a guesthouse on Air B&B in a posh residential area close by SDL. The host gets great reviews and seems like she'd be very helpful, she will even drive people around if she's available. Pros - cheaper option, and close to SDL, possible lift from the airport. Cons - taxi is the only way to get around, no 'hotel support' if things don't go to plan (eg if I need to leave my luggage there for the day or something).

Logistics is proving a bit of a nightmare at the moment not knowing the opening times for the park or hotels. Ideally, the hotels would open early enough that I could go there, check in, drop my luggage and still make it to the gates with plenty of time to spare before opening. Even if it seems like this will be the case when hours are announced, I'm not sure I want to take my chances with *every single* other hotel guest wanting to do exactly the same thing. If that's the case, when I arrive I need to stay somewhere relatively easy to get to from SDL that will be happy to store my luggage for the day while I'm at the park.

I can't quite believe that they wouldn't open the hotels up the night before to avoid all this nonsense!

What a hard pick! I don't know which one of your 3 options I would go for. Maybe 1 or 3?

I would contact air BnB person and see if leaving your luggage is an option if you needed it. How "close" to SDL? Any info on whether they will have lockers as you will only have a small bag won't you as its only a few days trip? Very tricky but exciting to be first in at both hotels as well!

Ok so there is a wonderful DISer on the Shanghai planning thread who is all over it and has already discovered the planned opening time :thumbsup2

Apparently the park won't be opening until 12pm. Seems kind of late, but at least it will give me plenty of time to get myself organised and hopefully still be one of the first in line at the gates.

This helpful DISer has suggested that the hotels might open at 6am. That would be awesome! That being the case, I'd probably aim to arrive at the resort at around 5:45am and be one of the first to check in, then make my way to the gates and begin the long wait there. Hopefully I'll be able to hold off on needing the bathroom until after opening lol! The joys of travelling solo.

At this stage, and given the information above, I have to admit I'm leaning towards 3 as well.

Good idea to get into contact with the host on Air B&B. The house is within the same block as SDL, I'm guessing just a few ks by road.

I'm planning to take a large carry on bag with all the stuff I will need for the few days, and an empty suitcase, so I will need a luggage style holding facility rather than just a locker. HKDL has a luggage holding facility, so it's possible that SDL will too. I'm not sure how much information we'll get on that type of thing though.

Yep pretty excited to be the first person to stay in my SDL Hotel room! And also to be able to try out both hotels :thumbsup2

So I went ahead and booked the room on Air BNB. The host seems like a lovely girl and has been very helpful so far. She will be able to send me directions from the airport in Mandarin so that I can just give that to the taxi driver, and has offered to give me a lift to Disneyland on her way to work in the morning! Plus, having spent $600+ on a concierge room at the SDL Hotel, my wallet is loving the $70 price!

Time for another SDL update!

Knowing that it will be crowded and chaotic for my visit, I'm starting to make a list of attractions to prioritise. Opening Day of course, I will be prioritising any ceremonies etc they have, and then possibly getting my hands on some merch before it all goes!

On the other days however, I will have more time for checking out the various attractions around the park. Although some may not be open (Disney are insisting that they will have all 'e-ticket' style attractions open), here's what I'm hoping to experience while I'm there (all pictures taken from the official SDL website). Here's my Tier 1 (if it's open, I must experience it!).

Roaring Rapids (Adventure Isle)

Plunge through dark chasms, outrace a ferocious beast and churn through raging, roiling currents on a thrilling raft adventure!

Alice in Wonderland Maze (Fantasyland)

Wind your way through the maze of Alice’s Wonderland world to attend this delightfully mad tea party. This is the first Disney attraction to be based on Tim Burton's version of Alice in Wonderland.

Voyage to the Crystal Grotto (Fantasyland)

Journey deep into a cavern where favorite Disney tales come alive in a dazzling display of music, light and wonder!

Garden of the 12 Friends (Gardens of Imagination)

Discover an oasis where the 12 signs of the Chinese zodiac are depicted by popular Disney and Disney•Pixar characters.

Tron Lightcycle Power Run (Tomorrowland)

Sync the pedal to moto-metal while twisting, turning and riding for your life in the cyber-fi world of TRON!

Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for the Sunken Treasure (Treasure Cove)

Ahoy! Join Jack Sparrow’s swashbuckling band of buccaneers for a monster-meeting, treasure-seeking, high-seas adventure! This is a completely new version of POTC, using new technology specifically designed for this ride.

Tarzan: Call of the Jungle (Treasure Cove)

Hang on for an incredible live stage show that soars with music, comedy, romance and high-flying acrobatic action.

Golden Fairytale Fanfare (Gardens of Imagination)

Celebrate the songs and stories of beloved Disney Princesses in a breathtaking performance at Enchanted Storybook Castle.

Ignite the Dream (Gardens of Imagination)

See Enchanted Storybook Castle transformed when Disney magic lights up the night with stunning special effects!

And Tier 2 (if it's open, and I've achieved everything on my Tier 1 list, I'll prioritise these above other attractions).

Camp Discovery (Adventure Isle)

Traverse challenging rope courses, hike scenic trails and dig for ancient relics as you explore Adventure Isle.

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train (Fantasyland)

Race around through the diamond mine from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs on an adventurous family coaster. I realise I could also experience this at WDW, but I haven't been yet, so may as well do it in Shanghai!

Buzz Lightyear Planet Rescue (Tomorrowland)

Blast away at Emperor Zurg’s abominable bot army in an all-out battle to save Planet Pepperonia! Same concept as other Buzz Lightyear rides, but a new storyline.

Eye of the Storm: Captain Jack's Stunt Spectacular (Treasure Cove)

Catch Captain Jack in action—with high-energy stunts, side-splitting comedy and a swashbuckling finale you’ve got to see to believe!

If by some miracle I still have time to spare, here is my Tier 3 (nice to experience if I have the time).
* Soarin' over the Horizon (Adventure Isle) - I enjoyed the original version of Soarin', but haven't felt a compelling need to do it again. I wouldn't mind seeing the new version though.
* Peter Pan's Flight (Fantasyland) - As far as I can tell, this is just a replica of DLR's version. However, I didn't get to experience the updated version in DLR yet, and I did very much enjoy the original version.
* Mickey's Storybook Express (Gardens of Imagination) - Shanghai's parade. Doesn't fill me with excitement, but I'll catch it if I can.

These attractions I have little interest in doing, and would prioritise re-doing some of the Tier 1 or Tier 2 attractions in favour of these.
* Hunny Pot Spin (Fantasyland) - This is just a differently themed version of the teacups. I only do the teacups for their iconic value.
* The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (Fantasyland) - The same fairly plain version that's in DLR.
* Dumbo the Flying Elephant (Gardens of Imagination) - The same the world over!
* Fantasia Carousel (Gardens of Imagination) - I'll enjoy looking at it, but won't waste my time riding it.
* Marvel Universe (Gardens of Imagination) - Absolutely zero interest.
* Jet Packs (Tomorrowland) - Apparently this is similar to Astro Orbitor, but has some new technology. It still doesn't appeal to me.
* Star Wars Launch Bay (Tomorrowland) - Absolutely zero interest.
* Stitch Encounter (Tomorrowland) - Absolutely zero interest.
* Explorer Canoes (Treasure Cove) - DH and I have tried kayaking a couple of times and haven't enjoyed it much. It makes me think I wouldn't enjoy this very much.
* Frozen Singalong (Fantasyland) - So over Frozen I will avoid this like the plague!

Of course, this list doesn't include characters, which is a whole different ballgame! I'm thinking I might have to concentrate on one aspect for each of my three days - opening related stuff on Day 1, maybe rides on Day 2 and shows on Day 3, and fit characters in around that. I'll be happy as long as I get to meet someone at some point. Perhaps I should consider doing a character breakfast on my last day, just in case!

Oh wow You are organised with your tiers of what you want to see I haven't even begun to think that way I guess I was hoping it would be possible to see most of it in a few days even with the crowds.

Hotel check in when you went to book and there were the T&Cs box it said that hotel check in was not until 3pm so I just assumed that would be the time on opening day as well that was when I decided I wanted tickets more than a room if the park opens at 12 and you can't get tickets till 3pm and everyone is going to be trying to do the same thing I can't imagine it would be very quick.

I saw that check in wasn't until 3pm. Of course usually you can check in any time you like, get organised and just leave your luggage there, but not sure whether this will be the case on Opening Day. The only reason I was willing to spend $600+ on a hotel room was for the guaranteed entry on Opening Day because I missed out on tickets despite my best efforts, so I will be a very unhappy chappy if that's not until after 3pm!

Good luck with it all. Your tier 1s would be mine too! Actually your tier 2 and 3 probably are too tho stunt show might have edged a little higher.

OT I came within a whisker of booking airfares to China in October thx to an amazing Singapore airlines deal, DH has leave booked in advance for then, (and bad news at the Dentist that will involve future mental trauma + lots of money - what to do when you are depressed - retail therapy except in my case travel therapy!!). Anyway, then realised we don't have a lot of time, I think I want to do China more or less once and see all the key things that one time, I don't want to go to SDL within the first 3 months of opening to let all the hiccups and hopefully the crowds (somewhat!!) iron out and if I do China SDL is a given, and I have done no research into tours, time needed etc so I let it pass-reluctantly! You will come back singing so many praises and so many pics I will probs be kicking myself!

I'm sure you will be thanking your lucky stars you've given it a bit longer when you read my reports lol! I'm the same with travel therapy too ;) It sounds like you've made the right decision for where you are now though. That's kind of why I didn't bother to venture more into China in the end (lack of time, would rather just go once and see all the places I'm interested in). And you'll have plenty of time to research further when you do go.

ETA: I meant to say, the pirates stunt show did start in Tier 1, but at this stage I have no idea how much time I'll have in the parks (opening hours etc have not been released yet, and I still don't even know whether I'll be able to get in on day 1 lol!), and how long things will take. Shows are generally a pretty big time commitment, so hence the downgrade to Tier 2.

So I just got my ticket for Opening Day!

party:

I got a heads up from one of the awesome DISers on the Shanghai thread that they seemed to be available again. Unfortunately though, that was at 8:30am, and I didn't see the message until lunch time. I thought I'd give it a go anyway, and they were still there! The transaction went through, and the tickets are now in my hot little hands (well, my hot little 'My Tickets' website)!

I know it was pretty likely that I would have been able to get in anyway, but it's such a relief having the ticket and it will make my Opening Day morning logistics that little bit simpler :thumbsup2

I am so excited to see your pics and read your comments! It looks amazing and the technology will be incredible. DH has been wanting to visit China for years and I have vetoed it for other places, but this DL opening may sway me...

Haha we're the opposite. I've been interested in China for a while, but DH is definitely not! The difference is, the opening of a Disney park does not entice him either lol! We'll get there one day though :thumbsup2
