Scratch off lottery tickets

I received one in a stocking for Christmas. There are no instructions on it or on the Maryland Lottery website. How do I know how many places to scratch off?

What's the name of the game? There should be instructions somewhere. It's almost always on the front of the ticket.

My homeowners insurance agent typically gave a lottery ticket every Christmas with a magnet calendar. Some years it's been a lotto ticket, but this year it was a $1 scratcher. This year it was a match 3 amounts, plus a $10 win if there was a 10 at a specific spot.

I remember some odd rules too. California Lottery scratchers used to have a spot with a confirmation number underneath. It said the ticket was void if that area was scratched off before being redeemed at the store or lottery headquarters. They changed that rule when they figured out that the info was basically useless to anyone except the lottery. Also, winning tickets could only be redeemed at the store where they were purchased, or mailed to the lottery office. That made it difficult to give them as gifts.

You should be able to scratch the whole ticket. In Texas, each store that sells tickets have a little machine in the store that scans your ticket and will let you know if won anything. I always take my tickets to the store and check them just in case I missed something.

It is Holiday Lucky Times 10. It says "Match any of the Holiday Numbers to 1 or more of the 3 winning numbers, win prize shown for that number."

You should be able to scratch the whole ticket.
That's what I wondered, If I just scratched them all and they checked to see if any matched.

All this and I am sure I will have won nothing. Thanks for your answers.

Yep, scratch all the ornaments off, those are the numbers you want to get. Then scratch the presents, if any of those match the above numbers, you win the prize shown.

It did have the rules, but they can be kind of confusing. This game also seems to be used by other state lotteries.

It looks like there are 3 winning numbers at the top under the ornaments. Then there's the field of 15 boxes, each with a number and a prize amount. So if one matches a "winning number", you win the prize under that number. And if there's a bell you would get 10x the amount under the bell automatically without having to match a number. However, if you don't quite understand the rules you could just take it to a store and have them check. Most won't even look at the rules - they'll just scan a barcode or perhaps a matrix code, and pulls the result from the lottery database.

It's not like a game where you could influence the outcome by selectively scratching off certain spots. I've heard of store contest games where you'd scratch off a multiple choice answer to a question, but it would be void if you scratched off more than one answer. The outcome of your lottery ticket was predetermined when the ticket was printed and you're just finding the result by scratching off the latex. They have an exact schedule of prize amounts and total number of tickets, and the tickets are printed to match those prize amounts.

I used to occasionally buy BINGO scratchers just for kicks. They cost maybe $3 but were a bit more involved than the average scratcher. Each one had several BINGO numbers hidden underneath, but visible BINGO cards. So I'd scratch the number off one at a time and then the "cards" could be marked by scratching the BINGO spots. However, my marks were unofficial.

The other thing that occasionally comes up is a misprinted ticket. A ticket doesn't win until it's validated against the main database. Here's one where the player sued for $500,000 claiming that it said there were two "1" marks matching the numbers at the top. However, even I can tell that it was a misprint where it was supposed to be an 18 and 12; the numbers are supposed to be spelled out and there's and E and a T visible. If it were that easy then I suppose someone could take a pocket knife and remove a digit to "match" a number.
