EWWWWWW!!! And I ate this stuff.

Pig snout???

Okay--definitely not eating it again!
(family does all beef or all pork hot dogs---nothing with random pig or cow parts).

Well--it was delicoius at the time....I'll just have to stick with scrapple memories.

I have read that hot dogs also have ground up snouts and everything else. There isn't really any difference between a regular hot dog and scrapple.

Sure there is. Scrapple tastes WAY better! :goodvibes

Scrapple is made of what's left after they make hot dogs! ;)

Scrapple is ground up pig snouts and other stuff, mixed together with a cornmeal and formed into a loaf (it is seasoned also). You then slice it and fry it for breakfast. I'm not sure it's any worse than eating sausage or hot dogs. Well, maybe it is.

Scrapple (18818)
Ingredients: Pork, Pork Stock, Pork Snouts, Pork Skins, Pork Liver, Corn Meal, Whole Wheat, Salt, Spices

BARF!!!!!!!!!!

Love it!

We don't have it here in SW PA. My DH is from the eastern part of the state, so I got to try it after we got married. Nobody ever told me what was in it and I really enjoyed it before I heard the gross stuff. :rotfl: I try very hard not to think about the ingredients when we travel east -- we always have to go to a diner so I can get some scrapple and DH wants to get his pork roll.

I like it.
The cooking in our family (Dad"s side) comes down from our Amish (Pa 'Dutch') great-great grandmother. My Dad's family made the stuff, so Papa Deuce, the line about getting the kiddos to stir the pot, ain't it the truth! ;)
Yep, a flavor treat not to be beat!

Seeing this thread has taken away any desire for breakfast that I may have had this morning!

No Souse is what it is called, head cheese is something entirely different.

Souse and head cheese are interchangeable in this area. My grandfather loved souse but the look of it was too much for me- like a meatlovers' version of a jello salad :crazy2:
I lik scrapple but I need to be in the mood for it and it needs to be cooked right- sliced about 1/4" thick, panfried until the outside is almost burnt but the inside is still soft, and served with lots of ketchup and pepper. I don't like the kind that has liver in it.

Naww, that would be Liverwurst!

I picked "Like" because I only cook it for DH & I a few times a year.
Never floured it tho, I'll have to try that.

Flouring it keeps it from falling apart when you go to turn it. My PA Dutch grandma taught me that trick.

Glad we could help. ;)

**** on a shingle - my PA dutch dad used to eat that, too, forgot about that one. I miss the little diners in eastern PA - home cooking at its best. Too many chains around here.

So how can I get some scrapple from PA to MI? Anyone know of a good vendor who would ship? :-)

Well--I personally eat veggie dogs ;)

Oh, you mean **** on shingle (SOS)
I know that's what it's called but that stuff is heavenly.

I do remember, though, a few years back when we were having breakfast at an NCO club. I think I had the "true" version of SOS. They tried to make some version of cream chipped beef but they didn't use the chipped beef, they used ground beef. Now, that was truly SOS!

This is just the way I like it. Really crispy on the outside. I've had a few people cook it for me and they don't get it crispy. Then I can't eat it.
