Iam thinking about getting a subscription to a scrapbooking magazine for layout ideas/inspiration.

Which do you like best and why?

Thanks - Kim

I am so glad you posted this, I was thinking the same thing myself!! I really need some inspiration some days! LOL I can't wait to read the responses! :)

it depends what you want Creating Keepsakes is amazing, and has some very cutting edge ideas in it - I like to read it, but I will never use many of the ideas in my book - they are just too fancy for me.

Simple Scrapbooks is probably my all time favorite, lovely layouts, and at a level that I can really use the ideas, and get a lot of use out of the layouts.

PaperKuts is good, it's pretty cutting edge like CK, but not quite so far out there. I mainly get it because a couple of UK Scrappers get published in there from time to time, and I like to see their work.

Memory Makers and Ivy Cottage are not really my cup of tea, but they may work for you. Ivy Cottage was big into paper piecing and paper dolls the last time I looked at it, so if that is your style, then you may get good ideas from it.

Scrapbooks Etc is another nice one, which I buy occasionally - they have nice descriptions to explain how each layout was done, and also ideas for using your supplies for other projects like cards, or calendars.

They all have websites, so you could have a look around the websites to see if you can get an idea of if they are for you or not,

I got a subscription of Creating Keepsakes for Crhristmas. I LOVE it! I get so many great ideas from it.

I subscribe to two magazines:

Creating Keepsakes: I love the magazine. It has some great ideas but keep in mind it is for the very advance scrapbooker. I have never tried to duplicate one of their layouts.

Simple Scrapbooks: I really like this magazine. It is very much my style. I got my Ariel layout inspiration from them. I really like how they encourage you to use colors. They had a color article in the magazine and this how I figured out my color combinations for my Ariel. I like this magazine because you can be creative without copying the exact same layout. The layout in this magazine of Ariel was a two page layout but I didn't have enough photos to do that kind of spread. So, I made it work out.

I just picked up Memory Makers. I'd say half of the layouts were my style while the other half weren't. It appears this magazine tries to applease all type of scrapers. I like it.

I haven't seen Papercuts or Ivy cottage yet.

HTH,

Tina

The Simple Scrapbook sounds like a great one to subscribe to...is there any online link that you can order it? I tried the usual simplescrapbook.com, but that didn't work! LOL

Thanks

Thanks, Tina!! I now have my early birthday present ordered!! :):)

One thing I have been doing before I decide on what one I want to subscribe to is picking one up at a store. I like the Memory Makers one but I also like Creating Keepsakes. Last night when I was in the store I wondered about Simple Scrapbooks so I might have to check that one out. I still haven't narrowed down my choice but at least I can pick which ones will work more for me and which ones won't. I am thinking that maybe two is what I will go with.

I receive Creating Keepsakes now. I really like all the articles about new techniques and new products, and actually like the ads. However; I find the layouts a little intense. Is Simple Scrapbooks like Creating Keepsakes, but simpler? Does it have articles about techniques and products? I may become a convert!

Chi-mom = Yes, Simple Scrapbooks Mag. is for simplier layouts. Actually, Simple Scrapbooks Mag is sister to Creating Keepsakes so, you won't see the same stuff in the magazines. I've used a lot of ideas from SS for my layouts because I am not that advance yet nor do I have the time. HTH. I really like this magazine. The last issue showed how to use the color wheel combinations which I used to do my Ariel layout. The only thing I don't like is that it only comes out every other month. I really like monthly magazines so, I have something to look forward too.

I have had subscriptions to Making Memories and Creative Keepsakes in the past but have discovered so many layouts and instructions on line that I am not renewing my subscriptions. www.scrapjazz.com has over 50,000 layouts and tons of articles on different techniques, etc. This is where I go when I need inspiration. www.twopeasinabucket.com is also a great site. You can also use any search engine and enter scrapbook layouts and will find tons of sites.

Check them out, you may save yourself some money.

But you are right about the on line gallery's of layouts. If I am going to "scraplift" something, it is more than likely going to be from their than a magazine!

That being said....I do like the articles in Creating Keepsakes, though not usually the layouts. I prefer the layouts in Simple Scrapbooks...and will probably subscribe to it ...someday!

I subscribe to Creating Keepsakes and Simple Scrapbooks. I will also pick up Memory Makers and Scrapbooks Etc, if there is an interesting article or theme going on that applies to what I'm doing.

Creating Keepsakes has come a long way...a friend of mine describes the magazine we get today like Vogue. She said, like Vogue, it's nice to look at, but you wouldn't really wear any of it. LOL :) I'm not quite that far gone on CK...I haven't scraplifted any particular layout exactly, but I will use some of the ideas I see used on layouts, rather than looking at the layout directly. That way if I really like something I can still adapt it to my layout or taste.

I do have to say that Simple Scrapbooks is rapidly becoming my favorite. The style in most of the layouts they publish are more up my alley. Simple and sophisticated. I'm not into the cutesy style as much, unless it's appropriate for my pages.

I also frequent Two Peas and Scrap Jazz online to get ideas.

They're all great!

I currently subscribe to Creating Keepsakes and Simple Scrapbooks. I echo the opinions above that CK is great to read for the articles and I am blown away by the page designs but dont have time myself to do things like put together the intricate details that requre sewing on the pages etc. I love looking at the ads for new products etc. though. Simple Scrapbooks is more my speed with ready made embellishments, simple classy layouts etc. my only complaint is that it is only published bi-monthly!! (way too long in between issues for my liking!) I used to subscribe to Memory Makers as well but decided 3 subscriptions were too many and out of the 3 magazines it was my least favorite. I also get lots of ideas /info on line--but having the magazines handy when a computer is not (like at the airport, on the beach, or lying in bed!) is great!!!!:p
