I have never done a scrapbook but thought it would be a neat idea to get one for my dd and dn (one each) for our trip this summer to universal and disney. After our stays there we will be at the beach for a few days and i thought this would be a great time spender for them and some down time for me.
What would i need to get to get them started other than the scrapbook itself? They will both be 13 in the fall.

Thanks,
Sharon

If it's not going to be a surprise, you could take them to the store and let them pick out some stuff they might want to use. Don't forget the basics, like adhesive, paper, stickers....etc.

My dd will be 13 in the fall and she loves to scrap. She has 2 books of her own and has helped me with our Disney vacation books.

This can be a strange age in general...and also for scrapping. I have a Girl Scout troop that has been involved with scrapping type activities for several years. Even when they are most into it (they are 14 now) their idea of scrapping isn't the same as most of us!

Whatever you decide to do...keep it simple. I've found my daughter and many of the other girls like to add a little color to the page, either by a full page wallpaper or matting the pictures (sometime "matting" means some geometrically placed cards that underlay a set of pictures). Maybe a sticker or two. Definitely not elaborate.

Also - they'll probably scrap in shorter spurts than we do!

Ok I don't scrap so what is the etc?
I have not a clue what i need to get them started other than the scrapbook. Pretend you are telling an idiot what they need to scrap:crazy:

Thanks,

A 12 inch paper cutter is a must. It looks frivolous, which is what I thought in the beginning, but I soon found out different.

Might want to check around and see if you have a scrapbook store in your area. I never knew such a thing existed until one opened up near me. I'm not into it, so maybe I just never noticed before.
One thing I know would be good are those scissors that cut in zig-zags, curves, etc.
Good luck!

Kids love the scissors! Wait for them to go on sale in Michael's or Ragshop...they go 2 for a dollar so you can get all the different styles.
I would also keep it simple, you need tons of paper, plain cardstock to mat the pictures on or cut shapes from and if you want patterned paper to wallpaper or mat pictures.
You may also want to get some templates so the girls can cut their pictures in different shapes. I think that's the basics, as you get going you will see what you need and then the fun begins and the wallet grows thinner!!

Thanks for all the replies on this. I looked in the phone book and we do have a scrapbook store in town . So i will start there and get some stuff at Michaels and check Hobby Lobby to see what they have as well. I hope there is room for everything in the car LOL. We are driving down so it could get interesting packing:)

Thanks again,
