Scrapbooking Group - Titles?

After spending an hour at Artbase last week, I am now itching to get started.

I bought some CardStock in various colours, some packs of mixed colours, glue, embelishments, some Velum, some fancy paper, scissors etc. etc. etc.

I have sorted some photo's out and have decided on my first layout - decided on the colour scheme - and need advice straight away!

How do you do the Title?

I dont have any templates - should I have got some?

I like a certain font that will enhance my theme I think, I can print it off my PC - but how do I actually get it onto the card? I dont think the card will run through my printer?

Is this such a stupid question?

Hi Janice.
No I don't think it's a stupid question in fact it's something I've been thinking about too.

I've produced about five layouts since Thursday and I'm afraid have found it very addictive. I'm already getting another order ready so that I can do some more next week.....
doesn't look as if the children will be fed or housework done.

Not that I'm particularly qualified to answer this but....

The cardstock, patterned and plain paper, and in theory the vellum all go through my printer. The first one's I have tried, the vellum I'm about to. If it's A4 then great, if larger I have to trim it to size. I've even put a "scrap" in and printed on that. As long as I tell the printer the size, it'll print ok. You can even "mirror image" the typing so that you can cut it out on the wrong side if it's something that you need to cut out.

If you're thinking about templates, the set of five that I just got from ScrapMagic is excellent at just under £12.

Thanks for that help - I think mirroring the image is what I want to do, just have to remember how to do it

I am just off to the Crop at Scraptastic so hopefully will get lots of tips there.

sorry I missed this Janice, but I think Carole's covered everything. I have the set of 5 templates from Scrapmagic, and I've started using them a lot. Prior to that, I used the printer a lot - you can print on most card stock, as long as it will fit through your printer.
i have no trouble with vellum, but some people say it smudges, I don't know if it's the vellum or the ink, but it's worth a try.

To print backwards, I use the Word Art feature in Word - type my title and then use Draw, Flip Horizontal to reverse the box. You can set the box borders to clear so that the box doesn't print.

If the card/paper is only patterened on one side, remember to put it in the printer upside down - I have forgotten this before, and it is quite annoying!

Other title options are Letter stickers - I am quite partial to these because they are easy! or Handwriting! Not a personal favorite of mine!

Thanks for the reminder about flipping the type in Word Art Bev - I had a complete block yesterday!!

I bought a stencil at the crop yesterday for my first layout and also some sticky lettering so I am making a start with them - but once I saw all that was on offer yesterday and what other people were doing I realised that the possibilities are endless

I have scanned the two photo's I want to use for my first one as they are precious and I have no negatives - they have come out really good so I was really pleased to pick up this tip too.

Seems common sense now when I think of it but it would never have dawned on me! Doh!!

I scan and print nearly all of the photos that I want to use. The originals are neatly arranged in albums and I don't want to remove them. Then I've got gazillions of b/w and sepia photos, some of them from the twenties so I'll scan them in, tweak them and print them out. Once I'm onto new photos, I'll use originals unless they need cutting, then I'll use copies.

Bev, I got the templates from Scrap magic after you mentioned them. She had two sizes left and I just couldn't decide which size I needed most so.....'fraid I got both sizes. Nice selection, I'm glad you mentioned them

So, Janice, how was the crop? Did you have fun?

Yes Carole it was great. I didnt get any work done as I didnt take much stuff with me - was a bit unsure of what to do, but I met a great group of people and picked up quite a lot of tips and just watched everybody doing their stuff. It was really interesting and informative.

I would definetly go again, next time I would take my stuff and try to do some work.

funnily enough, I had to buy 2 sizes as well! Actually, you've just reminded me that I need to ring Scrapmagic because I was trying to find one of the templates the other day, and couldn't find it anywhere. Eventually, I laid them all out, and I had one of the font's twice, and another font is missing! I thought I was going mad.

You are all so organised with your photo's in albums - mine are all in shoe-boxes. they used to be just tossed in the bottom drawer of the dresser, but when we couldn't close the drawer anymore, I decided it was time to take action, and i bought some of boxes from IKEA that look like shoeboxes. I have the packs of photos' in sort of chronological order, but they aren't very well organised, I could really use a better system.

I quite often print on the right side of patterned paper, an outlined font and alter the ink colour to tone/complement the paper.

I print everything out on ordinary paper in black, to get the size and appearance right!!

BTW At my first crop at Scrapmagic, I was overwhelmed with everyone else's work. I think soaking up all the ideas is the main part!! Oh, and gassing!!!

Fiona - that is a great idea about printing onto patterned paper - as I said the possiblities are endless!!

I have done the lettering for my first layout - I used the template I bought on Cardstock and cut it out. Mmmm - could be better I think, but for my first attempt I am quite pleased. I will go with it and try different ideas as I go along. My first page is almost complete so will show you as soon as it is done

This is addictive - but what has amazed me is the interest that is being shown by the rest of the family. DH was very impressed with what I have produced so far - I am sure he thought I was mad going on about doing a Scrapbook. One wonders if he was picturing me with one of the great big coloured paper books from our childhood! DD & DS think its rather neat seeing as their pictures are the first to be done and my mum just keeps looking at it with a tear in her eye saying how clever I am

sounds like my mum!

I think the scrapbooks do interest the whole family - my dd loves looking at our Disney Album, in fact I was late for work this morning because we just had to have a quick flip through it. We hardly ever look through the Disneyland Paris album (which is a normal photo album) - so it's quite nice to think that the scrapbooks will encourage us to look at our photo's more.

as for your title - cutting the letters out is a skill that you will get better at. Also, some fonts are much harder than others. I use some microtip scissors which help a little, and also a craft knife on glass (I use an old picture frame). Remembering to cut the centers of the letters out, before cutting the letter out of the large piece of card helps - as does just punching a hole with a hole punch, or using an eyelet, if the font will look ok with that.
