Scooters and private transportation

Traveling with a friend in December and his mom will be in a scooter (possibly her friend too). We typically rent cars but I don’t see logistically how we could do that with a scooter. Staying at the GF if that matters. Any suggestions on alternative private transportation options? Maybe a charter bus or something for the week? (If that’s even a thing down there)

Minnie Van Service
Please call a Minnie Van Service Specialist at (407) 828-3500 to request an accessible vehicle. Requests can be made 45 to 60 minutes prior to needing the vehicle. Minnie Van vehicles can accommodate Guests with standard wheelchairs, motorized vehicles and electric conveyance vehicles (ECVs); however, an additional wait time may occur.

Ask about the Minnie Van Service – Airport Shuttle when you call too. There is some info in the link above. Not exactly cheap, but it's an option. Minnie Van airport shuttle is $150 each way; gratuity not included.

We rented a scooter and a car. The scooter easily broke down and fit in the back. We rented a minivan, but the way it broke down it would fit in the truck of a mid to full size car.

A couple of random thoughts.

MinnieVans, mentioned by Steve H above, are certainly an option -- with a couple of caveats:
  • There are very few accessible MinnieVans, so availability might be a serious issue.
  • MinnieVan cost is high: $15 + $2.75 per mile
    • On the bright side, MVs only hold a total of 4 passengers, but I think they provide a free regular MV if you have a larger group.
They just prefer not to use the busses.
Okay...but. That preference is going to greatly complicate your vacation. Buses are easy, peasy. Traveling otherwise will require adjustments.

One suggestion I have is to check with Mears. I believe they have accessible vehicles, and they would probably be less expensive, and more consistently available, than Disney's MinnieVan.

You could also try Uber or Lyft. Neither have actual accessible vehicles, but if the scooter will fit in their vehicles that would be a less expensive option.

One note, tho: Uber/Lyft drivers are neither trained nor required to disassemble a scooter or load it into their vehicle. So you should plan on doing that yourself. If you're not willing or able to load it yourself, you should not consider this option.

In addition to the MV's, there are also accessible taxis; but they are also limited in number and there might be a wait. I think both the accessible MV's and taxis can take only one scooter/wheelchair at a time.

How convenient. Where did you rent the scooter from?
Most, if not all, medical equipment rental places offer one or more ECV models that can be disassembled, carried in a vehicle, and reassembled pretty easily. Randy's mobility absolutely; Gold Mobility; Walker...

For what you would pay fkr accessible taxis or some kind of coach, you could probably rent two cars - one carrying each disassembled ECV.

The OP should consider looking at threads &/or posting on the disABILITIES! boards, lots of great information & likely to find someone who has experienced this same scenario. Lots of great rental resources too.
