Does anyone have great suggestions for safely using a scooter during a rain storm, other than covering the controls with a shower cap? Is there any good way to keep the battery area below the seat from getting wet from splashing water?

I'm just curious since it's somewhat possible that another tropical storm (behind Isaac) could affect our trip in 2.5 weeks, and I don't want Mom to have no other choice than to stay somewhere covered if long downpours occur. I'm thinking perhaps we'll rent a wheelchair for the week if we see such weather is going to happen, since we can all poncho up and just push her through the parks, but I wanted to first see if there were other great tips available.

Thanks! :)

I just use a poncho that I purchased to cover both myself and the ECV. I put the shower cap and an old shower curtain over the ECV when I get out of it to ride a ride--though most rides are inside so no worry!

this is what I do:thumbsup2

Can you tell me how to cover the controls? We'll be there in Oct and I want to be prepared.

Thanks!
Some people use a shower cap. I use plastic grocery bags. Put the handles through the steering bar. Remember, tho, lots of times these plastic bags have holes/rips. I bring a small supply of them with me.

For the rest of the scooter, cheap ponchos work. In case you worry about wind blowing your rain covers off, get some assorted bungee cords and bring with you.

For driving -
There will be puddles, some deeper than others. Go slow through puddles to avoid splashing.
There will be less traction wherever the ground is wet, especially on hills, so go slowly to avoid hydroplaning or slipping.
Leave a larger space between you and people in front of you in case it takes a longer distance to stop.

If it is your own personal scooter (or if you rent one frequently), I recommend that you buy a designated tiller cover like this one:http://www.forrmobility.co.uk/Products/Accessories/tiller cover.gif.

You can buy them online at E-Bay and amazon along with at other places that sell the scooter accessories. They are well worth the time and money if you use a scooter frequently.

I fold mine up and carry it in the pouch on the back of the seat. My tiller has never gotten wet when I have used this.
