good question, Ive been meaning to ask this. I wondered this too, I have an ADR and the only reason I'm going there is cuz my kids are looking foward to sitting on those cars, I would hate to get there and not get to sit in one of them.
Thanks for asking.
They have a few tables but from what I've seen, they keep it for larger groups... and for people in wheelchairs, etc.. So people are also more comfortable sitting in a chair...the cars can be tight for some people.
I would arrive 15 minutes before your reservation and request a car.
In 4 years, I never had to mention that we wanted a car - we always got a car
I asked for a car when we checked in for our ADR and they told me that all advance reservations get cars. Not sure if the pic-nic tables are reserved for walk-ups or what but it wasn't a problem for us.
I have to say that themeing-wise, this was a really cool place to dine.
I just dined at Sci-FI last week and had an ADR @ 11:00 a.m. when they first opened. Many walk-ups were accommodated but I overheard the host tell them all that the cars are reserved for those with ADRs. They said they would be seated at the "flying saucers" which is what I guess they call the tables.
The flying saucers are the round tables in the back that resemble a picnic table. There are also square tables in amongst the cars. We always request those - we don't like sitting "behind" each other in the cars. We like the restaurant, and just prefer to sit across from each other at a table. I just make that request when we check in and it's always been honored.

All the times we've eaten at Sci Fi we had reservations, and the last 2 times (had 4 people one time and 6 the other) we were seated at a table. Who knows. It's easier to eat at a table, but for the atmosphere and esp if you have children, the cars are more fun!
We were also told in September 2009 that if you have a reservation, you are guaranteed a car unless you specifically request a table. For walk-ups, it's the reverse (they'll give you the first available table unless you specifically say you want to wait for a car).
We ate there last December. If you have a reservation, you are guaranteed a car I am pretty sure. Tables I believe are for walkups. We had a great time and our DD loved it!
We had ADR's during the first week of free dining. We were given the option of either a table or a car. They were running a bit behind so the car was more of a wait, but the kids really wanted a car. We loved it - good food and great atmosphere. The cheesecake was amazing!
1) There are no special places for walk-ins.
2) Cars and tables go to ADRS and/or walk-ins.
3) It is luck of the draw.
4) You can request it when you arrive.
5) But, no guarantees.
We just came back from our annual Disney trip in July. We had ADRs for Scifi. I made the reservation online. We were automatically given a car to sit in.
I'll be @ Sci-Fi in October and I'm just wondering how many people can fit into a car?? We'd like to eat in a car rather than at a table and there's 5 of us - 4 adults and 1 child. Will we fit??
