Are there any cars where you can sit facing each other rather than the typical car set up? I know about the picnic tables, but no interest in those

I think the picnic tables are in the back and are just regular tables. We sat in one of the cars you pictured a couple of years ago. They are in the middle of the “theater”. We were a party of 5 sitting at one that I think was made for 6.

We didn’t like it as much because it’s like sitting at a regular table and you have to look sideways to see the screen. Kind of defeated the purpose of going to Sci-fi for us.

Wow, we've eaten there many times and I don't recall ever seeing them. I remember the picnic tables in the back.

The red and yellow tables in the foreground are mixed in among the forward facing cars. They are not the picnic tables. You can ask to be seated at one when you check in, but the castmember may say they are designed for parties that include a wheelchair or for larger groups. These particular cars have two 4 tops so if you are a smaller group expect another group to be seated next to you.

The picnic tables are visible in the picture. They are way in the back behind the CM and under the two rectangular wall pictures. They are small, but we've seen groups of 4 seated at them. You can also see the seats which are backless stools. Walkups are frequently seated at the picnic tables.

We sat at a picnic table the first time we ate there. They are set up really close together, be prepared for that if you sit there. It wound up being funny, because we sat next to the same people on the bus the next morning.

We sat at one of the tables for 6 in the middle pictured above. The cars facing the screen were a little tight for a coupe of us. Was kind of a pain to turn to see the screen, but nice to be able to talk to one another.

Here's another angle of the regular tables (facing eachother). I love the theme of SciFi. Even if you sit in the regular tables, its still quite an experience. BTW, this is the quietest restaurant in disney. lol.

To my knowledge, the "picnic" tables in the back with the umbrella are most often held for walk-ups or used for special requests if someone doesn't want to sit in a car. The tables in the photos above are reserved for those who request it, or can't sit in the regular cars for whatever reason (i.e. disability, size, etc).

Unless you have a very small child 3 across won't work. It will be 2 and 1.
