Oh just stop it. It's a politically charged issue and you know it. Politicians were out pushing their policy agendas in record time after it happened. And we can't full respond here without pushing the boundaries of what is allowed in this particular forum.

Shootings are not a politically charged issue. No one agrees they are a good thing.

The guns were purchase legally. The shooter yesterday did not have a prior record that would preclude them from purchasing a gun. It doesn’t sound like there was a history of mental health issues either (yet). Obviously we would assume mental health issues though as what sane person shoots children?

There has definitely been a correlation in the recent past. I could not tell you why that is, but the data does not lie. If that was all that has been uncovered in the last 24 hours then maybe you could call me nasty names for pointing it out - but no. This guy had all sorts of mental health issues, and ignoring it cost lives. We really need to stop politicizing and start addressing the mental health crisis in this country.

It sounds like the shooter changed her name in 2020, so why now?

Does being transgender cause someone to buy a gun and murder people? How many trans people are out there that have not committed a violent act? Do you think they are mentally ill as well?

Just being transgender does not make someone mentally unstable. There are plenty of non trans people who are mentally unstable….

Even if it was (which it’s not), having that as a listed mental illness wouldn’t have prevented the individual from purchasing anything that was used yesterday.

Exactly…. Just having a diagnosed mental illness does not mean someone is, or will be, violent. I’m sure many people with anxiety have a gun.

Also, many shooters didn’t seek help and had no official diagnosis.

I think transphobic comments probably aren't allowed on the regular community board. You might need to head over to the controversial section if you want to say stuff like that.

As a mom of a Catholic school student in Minnesota, whose school went on lockdown yesterday, whose school will have their first school mass (open to the public) next week, whose schoolmates had extended family members who were in the operating room yesterday as a result of this awful event, and who is now nervous just to go to church…please (1) keep the victims, their families, their classmates, and their communities in your thoughts, (2) please advocate for more mental health services in all communities, and (3) let’s focus this thread less on the perpetrator, as I don’t think that was the intent of the first post.

I'm rather peeved at ABC right now. They've shown the shooter's photo more times in the last 24 hours than they showed Taylor & Travis' photos.

I'm talking every commercial break advertising the upcoming news. Then during the news, they talk about how more details about the shooting is in an upcoming news segment, then they post his photo.

What happened to when the news outlets used to say they wouldn't show the various shooters' faces too much, to help them think they will get personal publicity & notoriety from perpetrating these events? The more they show his photo, I think the more these unknowns think they can become infamous after death. The news focus should be on the victims.

You need to separate our the local ABC affiliate (who may be, but probably isn't owned by ABC) with the network ABC. Based on the time of your post, I'm assuming you're talking about the local affiliate.

This is good, because you can look up their phone number or contact information online and call the station and express your displeasure.

Yes. There are screenshots posted in online news agency reports showing the court document and it was noted that the reason for the name change is because the shooter considered themselves to be female at that time.

Additional details have come out today from news agencies stating that the shooter wrote that they were tired of being trans. I'm not going to quote or provide links here. We all have the power of the Internet at our fingertips, so everybody can do a quick search if they'd like. (fyi, I am not intending to sound sarcastic)
