School year is 'officially' open, again

I was just about to post that. @WebmasterCorey
BR, I took your screen name off my ignore list to make sense of the ongoing dialog here. I am confident that if WM Corey stops by here that he will find no issue with this thread having been posted on this board, the Community Board, and remaining here on the CB.
And now that it does, it would make sense to me to move it there in my opinion.
Your opinion, fine. That's what this board often is, a lot of opinions from many varied people, the essence of discussion. Seems as though most here (maybe all), agree it is fine here where it was originally posted
It's not hiding it but this is a serious topic.
BR, there are many serious topics discussed on this board, many. They have been for all the 26 years that I have been a member of the DIS, a frequent visitor, thread originator and poster to this board, the Community Board, and a past 2 year moderator of this board. Many times the threads here are fluff, lighthearted. Many times they are quite serious in nature. Lots of people, lots of topics.
So then it becomes a thread of thoughts and prayers. My thoughts and prayers do go out to everyone affected. 🙏
That is pretty much the standard response, BR, from most people, partially the reason for the somewhat sarcastic OP I made when starting this thread. People are shot, killed and wounded in a new mass shooting, many people, all the way from top people 'in charge', to middle people 'in charge', to 'regular people' 'not in charge' (like you, the others here, me), share the 'thoughts and prayers' cliche, and continue on. 90 days from, hardly a person anywhere will be able to recollect this most recent mass shooting in MN. The victims who are still alive will, the children, the parents, the families, the teachers and staff, they will. We won't. And that's sad.

As it stands, BR, this thread was not posted to be controversial. And it is not. I can post controversial. I do, often. And I know where controversial belongs. It does not belong here on the CB. This thread, as I posted earlier today, was posted as a news item, a sad news item, a factual event, an expected reaction.

Lastly, BR, a thought. It is ironic the the kids, the teachers, the staff were actually in a church, praying, praying prayers at a church service, a Catholic mass, as they prepared for what was expected to be a fun, educational school year ahead. Thoughts and prayers, indeed.

I always have said I value all life and support gun control. Catholics morn the loss of all life, whether someone is religious or not. It's not ironic that it happened in a Church. It's plain horrific. As a Catholic, I'm actively praying for all those affected.

This seems more appropriate for the Controversial Forum.
What? Why? What is controversial about a discussion of school shootings? Does anyone SUPPORT school shootings? Does anyone think they are a GOOD thing? Are our little minds so delicate we can't handle the truth?

The solutions might be considered political.

Mental illness however - 100% of the shooters have suffered from mental illness. Every one of them.

Don’t disagree, never said I did. My point was that you were steering us from the CB board to Controversial with your quote. That was my issue- not the content of your comment.

I very much agree with this. As a fairly conservative)non Christian:/jewish/:Muslim/ person living in a home with several guns I think the ‘thoughts & prayers’ time is past. Time for more attention to mental illness, proper gun purchase vetting.
I think if all guns disappeared tomorrow the truly troubled/mentally disturbed would find another way if they wanted. As a non religious person I’m still shocked at the hate directed towards those that are. Specifically these kids.

Kids. Shot, killed by someone who was so angry and ill that he chose to take it out on innocent kids. Planned to take it out on innocents. On purpose. THATS the villain today. The guy who did this today.

Does anyone SUPPORT school shootings? Does anyone think they are a GOOD thing?

Oh just stop it. It's a politically charged issue and you know it. Politicians were out pushing their policy agendas in record time after it happened. And we can't full respond here without pushing the boundaries of what is allowed in this particular forum.

Agreed. But, how can anyone think that Minnesota is a Red State?
You'd have to ask Gov. Newsom what he was thinking - his quote, not mine, and I won't re-post here to keep this out of politics. Do a quick search, pretty easy to find. Tim Walz is about as Democrat as it gets, so...

Which is why this post really doesn't work here. It's unclear just how fully you can respond to lots of things.

I don't think so.

There is a current, lively thread on the CT board, titled Gun Violence. Today's shooting is being discussed there in a more controversial manner than what would be appropriate in this thread or on this board.

Things I've learned about this shooting based on the news reports I've read:
  • shooter's mom worked at the school, retired from there 3 yr ago.
  • shooter is/was 23. At age 17, parent(s) (don't remember if 1 or both parents signed) signed a court document allowing shooter son to change name to female name.
  • shooter wrote on a lot of the magazines for the guns shooter used.
  • shooter wrote a manifesto, appears to have created videos of self discussing this topic, posted to Youtube.
  • Youtube took the videos offline.
  • shooter used 3 weapons
  • shooter killed self after killing the children in the church
  • shooter appears to be Caucasian, biological male/transgender female
My uneducated/not professional opinion:
  • the shooter's transgender status is beside the point and not really relevant to the situation
  • this made national headlines because transgender shooter headline gets more clicks & more ad revenue. Yes, I'm jaded about this. When a non-Caucasian shooter commits a crime with a gun, shooting & killing more than 1 person, it doesn't make national headlines.
  • $50 says that it will come out in the next several days that shooter is/was being treated at some point for some type of psychiatric diagnosis at some point over the past 10 yr.
  • Another $50 says shooter, if psychotic or schizophrenic, was self medicating with illegal drugs and/or alcohol. SMI individuals (severely mentally ill) often do self medicate.
  • shooter's parents likely had no clue shooter was planning such a thing.
  • if shooter attended school at the school which was shot up today (the school is preschool - 8th grade) and since shooter was 23 at time of death, 9 yr is a long time to hang onto a grudge.
  • lots of people experience negative things in elementary & middle school, but they don't return to that school 9 yr later to shoot up the place and kill people. Regardless of the shooter's transgender status, doing something like this, in my opinion, puts the person in the insane category.

School shootings are not a politically charged issue. How to reduce them may be but not the shooting itself.
