School year here starts Tuesday September 1st

I was supposed to be like that here, but the school board caved from pressure from parents. today we received a letter from the school stating that school would now start sept. 8. The tuesday after labour day. To make this work the teachers are going to be in the week before labour and use a few PD days that week, and then school goes all the way till june 30 the next year.
Personally i was happy for the kids to go back early. 1 less week to pay a babysitter.:thumbsup2

I'm in Ottawa's Catholic District & they are going back on Aug 31, the public board on Sept 1, & I am REALLY PO'd!!!! We had booked "Bounce Back" with Free Dining last August for this year for Aug 23 to Sept 3 which I thought would be a perfect way to end our summer PRIOR to going to school but with the change, that got thrown out the window. I could not take my kids out of school the first week back, especially since my youngest starts Grade 7 at a new school!

However, after some thought, I decided to bump our trip to end of September & take the kids to DW than. They will end up missing almost two weeks of school now but it won't be the first week where they are learning the routine. Sucks but we LOVE DW!

Our school board (Upper Grand) announced yesterday that the kids are going back on Sept. 1 but Sept. 4 is a board holiday. There were some platitudes about the process they went through to arrive at the date but in the end it was about making their school year match the Catholic board's so they could share buses.

Our calendar just came out (Upper Canada district School Board). School starts for the students on Sept 8th and we go until June 30th. Teachers go back before Labour Day for 2 PD days. I'm not too impressed!

Waterloo Region, we go back on the 8th.
Sept 1 & 4th are board holidays and the 2nd & 3rd are PA days for the students.

I think the catholic board is going back the 1st.

I'm surprised about using the PA days before school because I thought that it was in the teacher's contract to have them and they couldn't be used before school started (whatever the official date was). I know they are not "required" to go to school before the first official day, but the majority do to get prepared. In this board, there isn't even suppose to be a staff meeting scheduled before the start of school per the contract. Interesting.

I'm in the Upper grand with cslittle999 - Sept 1 start up. Not a huge deal for us b/c our trip is booked for the first 2 weeks of August - I know lots of people that already have trips booked and paid for though. I heard they did it b/c it was going to cost them too much money on bussing with the catholic board having decided to go back on the 1st already.

Did you see they added an extra day to spring break:cool1:

I wish they'd add an extra day to our spring break! Preferably the Friday before!

As a teacher with the Peel school board I can tell you that the students return Tues. Sept 8th. Teachers have PD days on Sept. 2nd and 3rd. We were told earlier this week - I have no idea why they are waiting to let parents know.

We go back the 1st as well. I think it's good as the alternative had them going to school until almost July and taking away days during the Christmas break/March break to make up for the days missing...according to our School council meeting.

What is missing is common sense from Queens Park. The education minister should have shown leadership and just mandated a September 8th start for all boards. If one board can manage a September 8th start, there is no reason why others can't.

It's going to screw up a lot of family plans and summer jobs. I'm sure in this economy a lot of tourist attractions will be missing those customers. Wonder how many folks will simply hold their kids out of school for a couple meaningless days?

Man, you guys have it great, Our school board here in southern Alberta has decided that the kids will go back on Monday August 24!!!! We usually go back before labour day however, this is way earlier than usual. I believe it is because we would be going into July if we didn't start so early. We had no plans to go to DW, but I was thinking maybe November to DL for my sons' birthdays.

Aug 27th here in Calgary with the public schools. Something to do with Worldfest coming to Calgary the next week. No idea what it is.
Normally I would take that week off - had to move it back a week.
