school uniforms, yay or nay?

That would get a huge thumbs down for me if they tried to do that in my son's school.

Don't mind them, but then again, I went to a private high school, so I'm used to it.

Love it.

My kids can get dressed in a blink of an eye when before it'd take forever for them--especially my girls. And for the most part, all the pieces (polos, pants, shorts) can be passed down from kid to kid, even between the sexes, which saves us a lot of money.

I think they look really cute too. :)

9 years of Catholic school and the uniform DID NOT level the playing field between the haves and the have-nots.

Uniforms DO make it easier to enforce a dress-code at school, and for kids to get ready in the morn, and for parents to shop for school clothes. I agree that it may seem an expensive outlay at first, but that it is less expensive overall.

:)

I didn't wear one for 9 years, but I did go to a Catholic school for several years and wore a uniform. It doesn't "level the playing field" one bit, it just makes deciding what to wear to school a lot easier.

At my school there were plenty of status symbols that we could wear (jewelry, shoes, etc.) to show how much money a kid's family had.

Here in the UK all schools have uniforms, my children where white pol shirts with the school logo, Blue sweatshirts with the school logo and black trousers for boys or black trousers or skirts for the girls. It does stop children being cometitive about who has the latest brand named goods. I think it also looks smart.
My childrens schools have regular "non- school uniform day" where they pay £1.00 (which goes to charity) to wear what they like. Children will always find a way to be individuals, you should see some of the hairstyles, hair colours :teeth:
Kids can always show their individuality outside of school.
When they leave school they will probably have to conform to some kind of dress code in the work place anyhow.

Nay here-I would rather buy a $3.00 kohl's mark down shirt for school then a unform. Plus-there would be twice the laundry to do since the uniform would get flung off once DS would get home.

Get a decent dress code and enforce it.

I have no problem with school dress codes, unless they require girls to wear dresses/jumper/skirt/skort but not pants.

I think it's a great idea! One of the schools that I worked at years ago even had a "dress down" day once a week so the kids could express their "individuality".. The parents loved it too - no complaints whatsoever.. :flower:

I wish our school had uniforms! All the money I'd save, plus I think it puts all the kids on an equal playing field. You wouldn't be able to separate the kids who can afford designer clothing and the ones who can't. I like the dress down day too!

Love uniforms. My kids go to a catholic school and the boys must wear navy slacks (shorts throught October) and either a navy, lt. blue or white polo shirt. The girls have the school uniform skirt or jumper which is a navy/lt. blue/white plaid and they must wear the same color polos as the boys. We cannot have any "labels" on the clothes, for example, no Ralph Lauren polo shirts. I really find it does cut down on the competition as far as who's better dressed, etc. In the winter they can wear navy sweaters (no hoods) or sweatshirts with our school's name on it, the local catholic high school sweatshirts or University of ND sweatshirts. Mornings around here are pretty easy thanks to the uniforms!

However, I will say that uniforms are very easy and I enjoyed the years that my DD was in Catholic school and wore them. It was just so simple. There was absolutely NO discussions, power struggles, whatever, when it came to what they were wearing to school.

A-men and Halleluja to that!

On "Dress Down Days", we have fights about what to wear. Regular days = no problems.

I wouldn't like it because I don't want to purchase double clothing. But then so far DS doesn't really care what he wears so I can always make sure that he's neat and well-dressed.
