School transportation?

Okay I don't want to get into the whole situation, it would take forever, but ... my kids may be able to transfer (out of the worst school this city has to offer), but there are a few problems concerning transportation.
They say that they have to give transportation to any kids tranfering out, but they say they will give a monetary contract or some such (rather than bussing). What I gather is they will pay me to transport my kids, but we don't have a car so they would need taxi transport which I'm sure is far above what the school will pay. Anyone out there have a similar situation? If so how much in the hole did it put you? How much was the school paying? I can put some money towards this, but not a huge ammount, and no way can I see put the kids on public transit!

Have you found out if any families near you are attending this new school? Maybe you can carpool?

Maybe if it is a couple hundred a month, you could get a small reliable used car and use the school money for the payment. If you had the car, maybe you could take turns car pooling with others, which would cut down on gas, etc.

In Philly there is some service called Philly carshare where you can simply rent a car for a minimum fee...I'm not sure if this is worth it or if your area has a service like it but...just a thought

Thanks for the ideas. There is no way I would reley on anyone around here for carpooling... we had one person taking our kids last year, and she kept falling through. The kids ended up late to school, and I ended up late too, it was a royal pain.
I think the best plan is to try to get a cheapo car and use the money they can give me to help pay for it. My DH would get stuck driving them because my schedule wouldn't let me get there on time, well we shall see. Not even sure if they will get the transfer.
