School supplies Thread

Don't know if anyone already posted this, but I was strolling through Target this evening and stumbled across some great school supply sales:

• Elmer's 2-pack disappearing purple glue sticks (the small ones)— 20 cents, no limit
• Papermate 10-pack pens, blue or red — 50 cents, no limit
• One subject spiral notebooks (college or wide ruled), 5 pack — 50 cents, no limit
• Duracell AA batteries, 2 pack — $1, no limit
• Vinyl 3-hole binder pencil pocket — 50 cents

Someone asked about Expo dry erase markers, and I believe they were two 4-packs for $3. They had a ton of other stuff, some very cheap.

Today I managed to score (2 trips).....
8 mini comp books $0.05 each
2 rulers $0.19 each
6 Mechanical Pencils $0.05 each
6 BIC Highlighters $0.39 each - YES I ACTUALLY FOUND THE BIC ONES and the store had a bunch!
6 single highlighters $0.05 each
1 package of crayola markers - skinny ones I think 20 or 24 pack $2.00 - rebate item so free after MIR
1 package of G2 Pilot pens - $1.00 - rebate item so free after MIR
2 packages of big pink erasers 2 pack - $0.19 each

And I paid with an old GC I got for transferring my prescriptions awhile ago so it all cost me nothing and I'll get the rebate

I also scored at Staples
6 packages of cap erasers $0.05 each
6 packages of the gel pens $0.99 each (I like these pens!)
2 protracters $0.05 each (don't need but the kids use them for drawing)
1 package Zebra Cadoozles Pencils $1.99 - rebate item so free after MIR

My kids are in 1st & 2nd grade and I buy what is on their school lists that get sent home at the end of the prior year and also a computer paper box full of stuff for the teacher to use as she wants in her classroom - stickers, pens, pencils, markers, crayons, scissors, basically any GREAT deals I can come across before school starts. I also put away 60 boxes of crayons and pencils for Christmas and send those in around the holiday concert so everyone starts off the new year with new basic supplies. Last year I ended up getting 20 dry erase boards (lap size) WITH a 4 pack of markers attached for nothing using the ECB system at CVS and donated them to my daughters K class as it was only the teachers 2nd year teaching and I figured this would help build her re-usable supplies up.

As a teacher, I just want to THANK YOU for giving so generously to your child's class. I am sure the TEACHER and STUDENTS appreciate it!!!

Many of my family members (aunts & uncles) are/were teachers and I saw 1st hand how deep they reached into their own pockets each year to buy things for their classrooms & students. Yes, I do believe it is up to the towns/school system to purchase classroom supplies but my head isn't in the sand in thinking that they do :sad2: If I can help defer that cost at all with my bargain shopping I figure it will benefit both the teacher and my own child as well.

Has anyone noticed Crayola watercolor paint sets on sale yet? That's one of the few things I have left to get. That and a "large school box" for DS. DD has a "small school box" on her list, and hers is good from last year. I don't see many large ones around.

Sunday I went to Walgreens to get some of their deals. They never got the mechanical pencils and highlighters. The manager told me to check back after Tuesday. So, I went in today got the mechanical pencils and the highlighters. I had my son with me and had him ready to pay for his. the cashier told me that they had a limit of 3 per HOUSEHOLD. She directed me to the manager.
The manager said, that it states on the coupon Limit 3 and they also have the right to limit what each customer purchases. He didnt seem very happy to be bothered by my inquiry. So, I explained to him, that I had already came on Sunday and they were out. I could have gotten 3 then and another 3 today. I didn't think it was too much to ask for, since I was inconvenienced on my first visit. Now he was really upset. He gave me this look, like I was asking for some outrageous request. Then he yelled "FINE THEN!! JUST GIVE THEM TO HER"
I really couldnt believe how he spoke to me. I grabbed my kids and started to leave. He said "Arent you going to get the highlighters?". Then I turned around and told him I couldnt believe how he had spoken to me that way. That I felt he was wrong to scream at a customer all over $1.20!! All he could say was "I'm sorry" as we walked out.

Was I really asking for too much?:confused3

Nena- that really sucks!

Does anyone know where I can can get 2 in binders? I need 10 of them. I am donating 5 backpacks full of supplies & am trying to find these cheaper than 3.50 a piece

Nope. You did nothing wrong. My mom was a retail manager for many years and the customer is always right. Plus we have always done that. I do it with my 5 year old. I have never been told that we couldn't get the item. I'm glad you put your foot down and walked out. I know it was a great deal, we were there today and bought things, but you told him what you thought and believe me, he is going to be second guessing that conversation more than you are. Happy nightmares to him tonight!!

 I'm sorry you had that experience. I don't think you are asking too much when you had to make two trips to get what you wanted. Most Walgreens I've visited don't enforce that limit printed on the coupon. I definately think a call/e-mail/letter to Walgreens corporate office is in order. I've heard they have been very good about handling that sort of thing.

I also felt an email/ phone call was due. So I called corporate and spoke to a very nice lady in Customer Service. I told her what happened and she asked for Store # and manager's name. She said she would pass on the information to his District Manager. She also got my name and number and said I would be contacted soon. She also asked if I had gotten the second set of highlighters. I told her no, because I didnt think being yelled at was worth .39 cent highlighters!!
:headache:

THANK YOU all for your kind words and hugs. I'm glad I wasnt being irrational.:thumbsup2

Walmart has the 1" Durable view Binders for $2 and the economy 1" binders for .97 cents.

DD12 wants a new one. (I think the old one is fine, but....)

Are there any good deals out that anyone's heard of? We just paid $15 at Wal-Mart, but I'm hoping something better will come along. I'm famous for buying now while the selection is good, then rebuying and returning if the prices come down. This one looked like that vinyl stuff which seems to rip after a couple of months.

I agree with you Nena I would have bought the 2 sets of 5 gone back to my car and come back in about 10x just to show him how stupid he was being! And God help him if he said anything else and I would still call Corporate !! I almost called Kmart corporate but they were so nice I didn't Let me explain in my sunday insert was a c'ofor a $10 gc for transfering a presscription so when I did the pharmacist knew nothing about it I had the ad with me so he went to customer service and I got my 90 days of meds free . Found out that the GC is illegal in NY but the insert company put it in by mistake !!Burt they handles the problem well and that's the difference !!

Good deal! Do they seem like sturdy backpacks? I'll have to take her there today to look. My kids refuse to use lunch boxes anymore--not considered cool here for high school or middle school--but DH uses one. Guess he can have a new one. Think he'll want HSM, too?!?

Also, anyone see any bargains on trappers? DD says she doesn't want to use one this year, but I'm encouraging it as I think they keep her so much more organized (middle school).

Just wanted to add that Lands End frequently has backpacks in their overstock section. Got a pale purple one for DD this year - $14.99. She should be able to use it for a few years! Oh, and it lights up - it's one of their cool blu things.

Best of luck shopping!

Are there any good deals on Fiskar scissors this week? I'd like to grab some extras just in case for the rest of the school year.
