School Starts

We have fewer long breaks. - Only 1 week at Christmas, 1 in April (called "Spring Break), and just a Monday-holiday in May, not a week. (We do have the week in February.)

It must make child care for the summer holiday a nightmare though.
We are quite fortunate this summer as my wife is still on Maternity Leave from work until 20th August, but this has still presented a problem for the last 2 weeks of the school holiday and i have had to take a couple of leave days at the end of August while my wife is at work as we had no one to look after the kids due to my parents going on holiday in August and miscalculating the dates of my wifes maternity Leave.

In England there has been a lot of debate about whether to scrap the 6 week summer holiday and have more terms with 2 week breaks in between as a 6 week break for the summer is thought to be too long. This for a couple of reasons, the first being the difficulty for working parents to get child care cover for such a long break and also because the kids get out of the school routine and forget what they have learned by being off for so long.

Another NJ girl here. Our schools start up again after Labor Day --I think September 5th is the first day this year. They let out on June 23.

My kids start back on sept 4, my youngest daughters's birthday-she will be 12...my kids got out on june 26th and in sept begin gr 11, gr 9, and gr7...the great news is they only go to school for 9 days and we leave for DL from sept 15-25...YAH!!! They will only miss 5 school days each...

Traditional Calendar schools start back Aug. 27th. Teachers start back the 16th. Year round schools vary.

I'm amazed at how early US schools finish for Summer.

Our Schools have never finished until the last week of July and have always started again the first week in September.

They also break for a week the last week of October, 2 weeks for Christmas and New Year, a week at the end of February, 2 weeks at Easter (although this has changed for the next year and we have a spring break for the first 2 weeks of April instead),and a week the last week in May to co-incide with the bank holiday.

Probably you get out later because of all those holidays. We start right after Labor day and get out mid June. We have off one day in October for Columbus Day, two days in November for New Jersey teacher convention at the beginning of the month, two days at the end of November for Thanksgiving, in December we are out Christmas Eve through New Year's Day, in January we have one off for Martin Luther king holiday, two days in February for President's weekend, Good Friday and the week following Easter off and then one day at the end of May.

Our kids start school on Sept 6 this year and get out June 13, barring any snow days. It takes alot for our schools to close and they didn't have any snow days at all this past year.

We start Aug. 27 and get out June 6. We have the first week of March off so we are starting to plan our Disney vacation. Yeah!

The kiddos here start back Aug 6th!! And they get out like the 3rd Friday in May!!

I am pretty sure the sign up at the school says school starts September 3. I love it that we are no longer starting in August! I LOVE summer vacation, there is nothing that makes me happier than having my kids home!

They got out June 6 this year. They use to go longer and start earlier, but they changed that in Michigan, last year I believe.

We start August 13. We usually get out the week before Memorial Day.

August 27th and 28th for the four public school districts in Madison County, Ohio (just west of Columbus).

We start August 22nd & get out I think June 6th.

Personally I'd much prefer the UK system where there's a shorter summer break & little breaks throughout the year. Even a week at Thanksgiving or extending Christmas break past 2 weeks seems to be too much to hope for.

We have year round school here. Three of the tracks started Monday, July 9th! DS8 starts back July 31st. DS5 will start Kindergarten August 2nd! We go to school for nine weeks then have a three week fall break. Disney here we come.

Our schools here start on Sept 4 right after Labor Day. They usually get out the first week of June-unless there are snow days to make up and last school year there were 5.

Our last day is scheduled to be May 23 provided there are no make up snow days.
