Does your school have a school and/or PTA newsletter?

I am responsible for putting together and printing 900 copies of our PTA newsletter each month. It includes a lunch menu, a school calendar, and PTA news.

I'd like to take this to the next level. I've asked the principal to ask the teachers in the various grades, as a grade and not as an individual class section, to tell what's coming up for the students in the next month. For the November issue, I wrote an article on spyware to start a PC Tips and Tricks section. The computer teacher said that she has some ideas for future articles. The 6th graders read a "thought for the day" every morning and I thought we could randomly select one of those for the newsletter.

Does anyone have any ideas that they like from their school newsletter for me? Suggestions for what you'd like to see, or things you hate about yours?

If you think I'm crazy for wanting to expand it, I'm willing to listen to your views, too.

I prepare our newsletter for grades K-6.

Our school has a weekly newsletter- each classroom has a small blurb of what will be covered during the week and any other pertinent information. Then there's upcoming events, etc. If a family has a new baby we welcome the baby to the school "family". (We're a small school with about 60 kids and we know everyone there). If there's extra room a short poem or writing piece a kid has done may be included. Sometimes fun illustrations as well.

They're on a single piece of paper using both sidee. Nothing fancy, just to keep parents in the loop.

Hi, I was a school newspaper moderator for a few years in a K-8 school. We have approx. 350 students. The sixth & seventh graders worked on the paper. It was open to 8th grade too, but by December, most were more interested in working on their yearbook to devote time to the paper. I digress -- but the kids enjoyed conducting polls, such as regarding favorite foods in the lunch room, and also enjoyed interviewing teachers and staff members. We also had a little space for students that "shined," maybe someone's cheerleading team won a competition, another student competed in a national gymnastics competition, things such as that. We asked people to submit items. We ran articles about the sports teams with quotes from coaches & team members, with current stats. We also had a "What's Happening" section regarding improvements, events, etc. I hope this helps. Good luck with your project!
