School Lunches For Your Kids

This is a good thread, I no longer feel alone! My DD is just finishing kindergarten and I've already told her that I expect her to fix her own lunch next year as I was so tired of packing the same thing every day. Here's her regular lunch:

1/2 peanut butter sandwhich on whole wheat bread, no crust
raisins or seedless grapes
goldfish crackers or Pringles chips
mozzerella cheese stick and a slice of American cheese
sunflower seeds or cashew nuts
black olives (yes, she LOVES them)

I used to pack her a chocolate milk but she decided that the ones she can buy at school are better.

I brown bagged for the better part of 2 years(and yes some school lunches are that bad)

usual menu:

turkey sandwhich
chips
carrots
candy bar
bottle of coke

DD picks and choses the lunches from the cafeteria and mostly brings from home.

I try to change it up a little because she likes the same things -- either ham and cheese or turkey and cheese. She's pretty flexible on the cheeses (havarti, jarlsburg, cheddar, or mozzarella) but she's really picky about the meats (boar's head or left overs from dinner).

She likes when I put her sandwiches on lavash bread or on soft flour tacos. I roll them up and cut them into little circles. They look pretty and fun. No condiments though -- she doesn't eat mustard, mayonnaise or ketchup on her sandwiches.

She sometimes likes having just the meats rolled up, no bread.

This year she got into bringing carrots, celery, bell peppers, or broccoli and a little container of either blue cheese dressing or salsa for dipping them. She loves that with her sandwich.

Then there's the typical boxes of raisins, chips, apples, bananas, oranges, etc. But always a bottle of water and a little note from mom to wish her a good day :)

Well my DS (6) has been eating cheese sandwichs forever !! at first we had to grill them - put them his container for school - and he would eat them cold .. now its just bread folded in half w/ a whole slice of cheese !! YUCKY .. he does get other variety such as crackers or chips, different fruits , veggies and cookies but the sandwich is always the same even if he is offered ham, turkey, bolony whatever its nope just cheese and bread please.. I am sure the teachers thinks we are wacky.. OH well LOL.. Michelle

This thread is interesting to me because I work in a Middle School lunchroom. Most of the things you all pack in home made lunches are things we serve at my school!!! We have three different lines each day. One has salad bar another has sandwiches and the other line is the hot line that has more of the traditional school lunches. What I like about our school is that we cook the food for the tastes of the kids rather than the tastes of adults. I am 42 years old but I am a picky eater and I do not like my food with a bunch of onions, peppers ,etc in it. Most kids are the same way. We use onion powder and stuff like that but no unknown chunky stuff.;) ;) At our school we have between 85% and 92% participation in our lunches and that is excellent.

DS is one of those picky eater too and I have sent in bagles, torillas, cereal (can get milk at school) pretzles, gold fish, yogurts, left over dinner stuff, DS does NOT do veggies or fruits..........drives me nuts.
