So the other post got me thinking about different things to put in my dd's lunch box. Another bulletin board that I go to people had mentioned bento boxes -- they look like so much fun (but I'm so not creative). Today I sent my dd to school with a star shaped ham and cheese sandwich, red pepper slices, extra slice of ham, animal crackers & water. I would love to hear other idea's to surprise my dd with.

in our house there's no option of to get hot lunch at school (private school too small to offer it).

my kids have the following options for entrees-leftovers (hot stuff heated in thermos to retain heat), canned items (purchased in bulk on sale) like dinty moore stew, chef boy r dee pasta, soup, chili... or the "coldies"-pb&j, lunch meat sandwich (or meat roll ups-meat rolled with veggies and condiment or just condiment), salads and the odd and occasional lunchable (purchased of the style without the candy or the junkie sugary beverage). side dishes are what mom's got on hand or on sale and stocked up on (currently chips-bags so you put them in a zip lock, veggies or fresh fruit with small reusable containers for dips or dressing, cookies-again ala zip lock container, yogurt, jello or pudding).

i used to stress over what to give the kids for lunch but then i started looking at what they chose on the weekends of their own free will-it was'nt bad, was far less complicated than what i stressed over, and met their individual tastes and nutritional needs-so i began having them choose from the healthy options i had available.

soooooooooooo much easier:cool1:

Websites such as Kraft.com and Family Fun has some really great ideas. My girls go to 1/2 day K so they are home for lunch. For the past 2 summers they have spent a week at a day summer camp in which the bring their lunches.

My girls love salads so I was able to make some chef salads for them. (pack dressing separately). Deviled Eggs w/a Cheese Stick was very popular as was a small container of Tuna or Chicken salad served with crackers. They loved making deli wraps which consist of one slice turkey, one slice ham, one slice cheese, spread lightly w/mayo or mustard, add a red or green pepper strip then roll up and secure w/a toothpick or pretzel rod.

My girls loved packing their lunches the night before. I had a list with a week's worth of items (in addition to above, PBJ and Bologna sandwiches were favs). They choose one main dish (examples above), one sweet item (graham cracker, fruit snacks, granola bar, trail mix), one savory item (crackers, goldfish, pretzels), one veggie (salad, carrot sticks, pepper sticks, celery sticks), one fruit (grapes, apple slices, banana slices, pear slices, strawberries, etc)

That seems like a lot, but they would get a very small sampling of each choice. It gave them a lot of variety and encompassed all food groups.
