My daughter came home and told me in idle conversation that yesterday in school (she's in 7th grade), she was made to stand outside the gym on a line the whole class due to her physical not being done. I asked her where the rest of the class was and she said inside the gym, and they forgot about her and the 2 others when the bell rang. Before there are any flames, yes I knew she needed a physical (appointment today), however we had to wait for her specialist that flies in from San Antonio once a month to do her paperwork and physical, last months appt was cancelled due to weather. Also when I left for work that morning at 0630hrs it was already 78 degrees w/high humidity. Would you be ticked off too?

Not if I was your DD. I would be glad I missed gym. :p ;)

I don't think I would be that upset.

I live Down South and it is unbelievably hot now....not appropriate in this heat, IMO.

At our schools they will not permit the child to be in school if a physical/required shots are not done. They would have sent her home if she went to our school.

That being said, no I don't think its appropriate that they made her stand outside. What was the purpose of that, was that supposed to be the punishment?

Call the principal. Children do not make and get to their own
physicals. This action was inappropriate in many ways. I'd be
checking on complaints re this gym teacher and if there are already complaints in their file-ask for yours to be added. It's
the only way bully teachers can get reprimanded.

I didn't take the outside to mean outdoors. I thought she meant outside of the gym itself-like in a hallway or something.

If it was outside in the heat I would be mad.

They might not be allowed to participate in gym if they do not have their physical complete.

I would've been stoked to miss gym and relax. :)

Her gym class isn't a normal one, it is for the kids that are going to play sports through the year, like now the girls on the volleyball use that time to practice while the others do other gym stuff. So the type of physical she needs is a sports physical, she will be playing B-ball and running track. She has a regular physical on file and is utd on her shots (she sees her Dr every 2-3months plus labs and x-rays). Last year for her gym class she didn't have to have a sports physical. Like Jaybee said it is currently quite hot and humid down here. I just feel that the coach could have come up with something a little more constructive to do to "punish" them.

Teachers make mistakes too. Your daughter said they were forgotten - I can see that happening pretty easily since the teacher was caught up in teaching the rest of the class. Jr. high teachers don't keep track as closely as elementary. I would tell your daughter that if she realizes she's been forgotten she needs to make her presence known!

IMO if your daughter and the others were bothered by it they would have gone in the gym and asked if they could wait there. Since you say she mentioned it in idle conversation I would guess she wasn't very bothered. If the problem was that she was too intimidated by the teacher to ask for help, THEN I would be upset!

I agree with this. It's possible the teacher did this as a punishment it's also possible he/she didn't know what else to do with your DD since she couldn't participate. Maybe you could help your DD be more proactive in situations like this. Would it have been totally inappropriate if she had asked to spend the period in the library instead?
