I need to write a letter to the school for my DS who just started kindergarten. I found a sample letter on another unofficial Disney site but it seems as though it would be for an older child. Can someone recommend what subjects/topics to include in my letter? My DS is my first child so this is all new to me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

25 more days!!!

I didn't go into great detail. I just let the teacher know the dates DS would not be in school due to a family trip. I let The teacher know that DS would make up any work upon returning home. I also sent a reminder note the day befor we left.
Have a great trip! We went last Sept. and so wish we were going again this one!:)

To Whom It May Concern,

Please excuse _______ from school on Friday, September 17 through Friday, September 24. Our family will be out of town on vacation. Having just started a new job earlier this year, our family was unable to take a vacation during the summer school break. If you have any further questions please feel free to contact me at 555-555-5555.
Thank You

Mrs. Brad Pitt

the above is perfect. DO NOT send that form letter. Teachers have seen it over and over and know it for what it is. Just tell them you will be out of town.

Ours looked like this except we didn't put in any reasons for the timing of our trip. We figured it was none of their business why were were taking the trip when we did, all they need to know is when we're gone, and when we'll be back.

I did usually add a line about, "If you wish to send any work home for our child to complete over the vacation, we will make sure it gets done and is turned in promptly on our return."

In our school district each child is can use up to 5 educational trip days per school year. So I am looking for wording that would fit into that type of letter - explaining what the educational experiences will be for him. It is easy for me to think of areas for an older child but not for a 5 year old.

If your school system is truly going to count Disney as educational (ours DOES NOT and I don't feel it should) then I would think whatever you could drum up would work, and it wouldn't really matter as long as it sounded vaugely connected to something. At this age they are doing sequential counting by 1's, 2's, 5's ect, and phonics skills to name a couple of areas. Come up with something he can count and something he can sound out or read.

My kids are little but we always use Disney as a educational trip. We count and we do letters and do colors. When we go to EPCOT we do languages in the different countries and such. Anything can be educational if you add it in there.:teacher:

My son is starting Kindergarten next week,
so we will be taking him out for a week after his frist week and a half!!!

I figured I would tell the teacher in person he will be out the week of Sept 20th and let her know I will send a letter,
I will make the letter brief, somelike,
Michael will be out the week of Sept 20th on a family vacation,
please let me know if there is any school work he can do while away,
thanks
I am not anticipating anything!!!
this is so early in the school year and its kindergarten...

I really think you are better being brief in your letter.

we'll be doing the same thing in 2 weeks!!! Dd just started K on Wed. My plan is just to write a brief letter explaining what dates we will be gone and when she will return. Does it honestly matter if the school counts it as educational? Is there a punishment if it isn't? My guess would be they already have specific locations they consider educational. Maybe you could try simply stating that you are going on an educational vacation and leave it at that without stating exactly where you are going?? If it just goes on his record as an unexcused absense I think it would be fine, as long as he doesn't have several of them a year. One week of an unexcused absense in Disney is not going to stop him from getting into any colleges or find that perfect job out of college.

I already spoke with dd's principal last spring just to see if it would be a huge problem. His answer to me, "If it's just for a week it isn't a big deal. I have 3 boys myself and totally understand how important it is to take family vacations. With the way the economy is today, you are almost forced into taking it when the prices are right." In other words, he was totally fine with it!!

our school swill approve up to 3 days for educational experiences....so....I included things in the note like visiting countries and learning about cultures at Epcot, Presidents Hall at MK for history, learning abouthe environment at Innoventions (Epcot), plays at HWS and animal exhibits at AK.

I say a good idea on the boards once....as you pass thru the countries in epcot, get a CM from each country to write a short note or even just "hello" in their languase ...teh CMs in aech "country" are REALLY from the country the represent...add in a few pics and you have a fun "project"

I went to our schools website and they have a form to fill out to request 'vacation' time off. I filled that out and sent it in with my oldest (you only need it for 1 child). In another week or 2, I will send emails to each teacher to make them aware and to see if there is any work they want the kids to do while gone.

I teach Kindergarten and when I have parents going to disney, I suggest a making a disney ABC scrapbook (bound on notecards at an office supply store or an all out photobook on Shutterfly or something), and journaling something they did each day. If you want to add education things to it, you could add in map reading. 5 is young, but they still like to know where they are, where they're going and how to get there. I guess I think they're remember more about a family vacation than they will what they learned the 1 week in school.

PS - I'm pulling my 3rd and kindergarten boys out for a trip in Jan - just booked our airline tickets:cool1:

What a great idea about the Disney ABC scrapbook. My son just started Kindergarten a couple of weeks ago - at his interview, I told the teacher that we have a Disney trip planned in November. She was totally supportive and said that the school believes in the importance of family vacations and what a wonderful opportunity for my son. I am going to do the scrapbook with my son and have him present it in class at his show & tell time. I love it.

Have a wonderful trip in January. :wizard:

Our school has an actual "educational trip" form that you can pick up from the office and fill out. I have pulled my son for a week in Kindergarten and in first grade. Next year I will be pulling him from 3rd grade and his brother from kindy for a week. Our principal is very supportive and so are our teachers. We just had my son write a journal entry for each day of our trip.

Please contact your district and ask about their attendance policy in regards to vacation. Nobody here knows how your school district deals with it.

Last year we took my DS out of Kdg for six days for a trip to Disney. I emailed his principal and teacher (that is the common practice at our school) and was honest and told them we were going to Disney, and DS would miss these days of school. Both were very supportive, told us to have fun and not to worry about it. I asked the teacher for homework so he wouldn't get too behind, and she gave me a packet before we left.

We ended up having three snow days while we were gone, so DS only missed three days of school (and teacher called me and told me not to do much of the packet because of that...) I don't think at this age, it's that big of a deal, if your child is doing okay and doesn't miss a lot of other days. :)

I agree with FightlessDuck. You should check your district's policy. It is usually a certain number of days that can be missed. Ours is 5 days. Other wise it is considered unexcused. For a kindergartener, no biggie but older kids have to deal with possibility that missed work can't be made up.
I have taken my kids out of school for trips before (2-3days prior to a scheduled break for $ reasons). I am a teacher and have no problem with families wanting to spend time together on a vacation during the less expensive times of the year. :teacher:

Just remember if it's the first week of school everyone is learning the routine so missing out on that is the hard part for kids.

State Regulations- School Attendance
Commonwealth of Pennsylvaniaregulations permit educational trips or tours sponsered by persons or groups other then school agencies. Provisions of the regulations provide that students may be excused from school attendance for an educational trip or tour upon reciept of written requestfrom the parents of the students involved.

Only have this because we are submitting our form today :) Our district does allow them to take family trips and be excused. The first year I had a letter typed up with what they woud be learning at each park and Principal Kindt said to skip it in the future. They already had about 100 differnt versions of the same thing from the internet or from peoples brains and alrady knew what it would say. :rotfl: It really depends on your district rules and the such.

To address the *shouldn't be excused as educational* part. Disney offers several organized educational activites. My kids are participating in the YES program. Its approved as an educaional resource for homeschooling. Not being contentious, but maybe you are not aware of such offerings? I only learned about it here, and I booked for our October trip last week. Our school is very heavy on the early science learning and my kids have discussed simple and complex machinery, special effects, robotics, centrifical force, ect. as we wait in lines. Everyday learning can be fun and just as important so kids can seethe principals of what they have learned applied around them :)

When I said that I was speaking to a family vacation, not taknig classes at Disney. The two are very different. I am aware ofthe YES program, and our school district says that half of your time must be spent on structured educational activites such as YES for the trip to count. That would be a completely different trip from a typical family vacation at disney. A typicaly family vacation at Disney just does not have enough "educational content" for me to personally feel it is justified as an educational trip. My school board happens to agree with me on this. Others seem to think that it is educational enough. I don't see it beyond possibly 1st to 2nd grade. The YES programs offer the type of educational experience that would justify it for an older student, but a parent would have to work pretty hard to do that on thier own, and in our district would have to provide some serious documentation.
