School dress code vent

No offense, but school policy or not, I'm not sure sandals are ever proper attire for school. Just me, and I do sincerely mean no offense.

Why not, it is school, HIgh school. What is the big deal. THis isn't corporate america, these kids are going to classes, dressing out for gym no big deal.

Our high schoolers are allowed flip flops, all other grades must have straps.

Strongly discouraged to me would mean that if my kid and I think its OK, she could wear it. We didn't have anything that ambiguous in her high school dress code fortunately. And flip flop type shoes were definitely allowed. She lived in a pair of Birkenstocks most of the time. She did have to bring proper footwear for gym and sports practice.

I can't believe the OP had to go to the school for something "strongly discouraged".

Um, no. I would be in there with their manual in hand. If any entity on the planet should know better than to be vague it should be a school. Gheesh, come on, really "discouraged" that is like asking the entire student body to wear flip flops.

Regardless of whether or not they are sensible footwear is not the point. The point is they are not disallowed and yet your son is being told they are not allowed.

I have to wonder what the problem is with flannel shirts as well! I can see how there might be issues with flipflops, but a flannel shirt???

That's what I want to know

It's 8th grade not high school- although I dont' think that matters.

I too would like to know about the "evils" of a flannel shirt....

I'm waiting for the vice principal to call me back.

I know at DD's old school flip-flops were not allowed because in a busy hallway having the *footbed* part of the flip-flop stepped on was a worry because it could easily cause a fall.
I know because it was discouraged (but not forbidden) and I sorta challenged it. :)

Plaid flannel shirts can be considered gang attire. Ex: Crips wear blue flannel shirts. I think its a bit dated though. Probably meant more in the 90's than now.

never heard of this, but then again, I didn't have kids in school in the 90's.

At my daughters high school, footwear was a question that was specifically asked at orientation. We were told "Flip Flops ARE allowed, except for in science labs". When it starts snowing, I'll have an argument from her because I won't allow the flip flops then.

Of course this is the same high school that said "Ipods ARE allowed". :rolleyes1 The Principal explained at orientation that discipline problems have leveled out near zero since they decided to allow Ipods. They are allowed during study hall and any time the students are working independently and the teacher allows it. My daughters art teacher says that once the lesson is introduced, they are free to use the Ipod, the science teacher says that during non-lecture/discussion time they may use them. :confused3

Just spoke with the vice principal. The reason the wording is ambiguous is ALL eleven schools in the city use the same handbook and SOME schools allow them. A few pages later there is a claus that the administration of any school in the city can change the dress code rules as they see fit (not exact wording). Truthfully, I did not read that far in the handbook yet (it's the 2nd day of school) but I will read it in it's entirety tonight. I'm sure it's riveting. LOL

I thanked him for calling me back- I like him a lot, he's very fair and easy to deal with.

Then they're dangerous at the mall too. Maybe malls should ban them. I think that's a really stupid arguement on the part of schools.

I don't think elementary kids should wear them because of recess and gym.

Do you have a copy of your son's school's dress code?

Does your Son's school have a specific exclusion in their handbook?

It tends to be kind of a regional thing. In most parts of the South, and especially in the Coastal states, sandals have been worn to school for generations. I wore them all the time back in the late 1960's. Sneakers actually took a lot longer to be accepted; I remember that we were only allowed to wear them for gym until 1978.

Note that these were not flip-flops, though; they were leather dress sandals with a full heel, a toe cap and a buckle. No one would have dared show up to class in rubber thongs.

I actually did a science fair project about the use of music in educational settings WAY back in the day. Pretty much I found out that for a majority of people music that they normally listen to can HELP them focus better. Music they do not know will hurt that focus because they couldn't seem filter it out as well.

Personally, I need some sort of background noise to really focus. Otherwise my attention seems to drift easier and the littlest sounds can pull my focus from what I am doing.

It's a full time job reading and interpreting the handbook, isn't it?
Glad the vp was fair.

As far as the flannel shirts...I have no idea why DS' school prohibits them (now after I bought some nice ones ) but to say that it is a private school, they need to wear a tie with the shirt. We actually matched ties to the shirts and they looked nice. They were warm, which my DS liked since there are few options of things to wear over their shirts and ties in the winter. I've never heard of flannel shirts potentially being part of gang attire, but I don't think that would be the motivating factor in DS's school, so...who knows? Ok, sorry, back to footwear!
