School dress code vent

My son has a pair of under armour sandals that are very comfortable and he likes to wear. We went over the dress code and while some things are outright not allowed (spaghetti straps- tank tops- tshirts with liquor advertising etc) flip flops and flip flop type shoes are "strongly discouraged"

He called from school and said I had to bring him shoes because one of his teachers sent him to the office. The vice principal said he could finish out the day with the sandals. If the shoes are not allowed, say so. "Flip flops are NOT ALLOWED"

Why don't you take their policy book with you and ask them to point out where it says they are NOT allowed. Or would that be acting like a smart butt????

I already pointed that out to the secretary- nicely and she said I would have to speak with Mr. Vice Principal and he was in a meeting- it's 95* here and I had groceries in my car so I couldn't hang around, but I'm sure she mentioned it to him.

That is the train of thought- but he's worn them all summer without hurting himself.

I took strongly discouraged and the safety reasoning to mean it's up to the parents. If they WERE NOT ALLOWED he would not have worn them.

Until highschool, that was how I handled the flip flop issue. Once my daughter got to high school, I told her they were her feet/toes etc, do what you want.

I think the school made a mistake, needs to send home an addendum to the handbook and just say they are not allowed. We have been in quite a few schools, and not one of them would allow slides as proper footwear. I do think they are a liability to the school. I also agree that my kids think they are comfy.

Was the class a biology lab or any other type of lab?

I'm a rule follower so I completely agree. Flip flops are fine unless they're banned.

Nope- social studies.

This is starting to remind me of the seizure inducing sneakers. Have a friend wear the slides and see if they have to change or not.

Dd broke not one but 2 toes on separate occassions last school year wearing flip flops and running into the back of other people's shoes in the hallway. They just are NOT a good idea.

btw- sandals with a strap are allowed... so the open toe isn't really the point.

That's crazy, if they don't want them say no but until they did come out and say NO I would let him wear them. They are allowed in our High school. at the elementary level they aren't. I was told at the elementary level they are a hazard during fire drills going down the stairs- that is the only reason.

Heck I saw kids with flip flops on when it was -10 last winter at the high school.

We had a similar issue last year with flannel shirts in my DS' school...when the v. principal saw him wearing one (strict dress code), he made him change (they have a closet full of clothes for this reason, lol). This was AFTER we had bought a few nice ones. Then I noticed this year flannel shirts were on the "forbidden to wear" list.

Then they should not allow them. Strongly discouraged to me means they don't think it's a great idea, but it's up to the parent.
