Anyone want to bet that's the REAL Swine Flu story?

Seriously do they REALLY think that those parents are all going to stay home with the kids "locked" up for safety.

Heck no, they are going to Six Flags, Sea World, Disney etc. :lmao:

Since this isn't really about trip planning, and we already have several swine flu threads on this board, I'm going to move this over to the community board.

The kids should stay home all day and do schoolwork to get ahead since chances are the school won't cover all the material given the days lost.

1. How do the kids KNOW what the material was. It's not like there was advance warning. Parents in Fort Worth are SCRAMBLING to find care for thier kids....

2. ALL states have "required minimum days" the kids are going to make these days up. So instead of getting out May 20, you will now get out May 27.

Taking vacations and having sleepovers defeats the purpose of why they are closing schools to begin with.

I have been wondering what parents of those students are going to do with their children too. Most day cares (at least where I am) usually have a policy that if the school district they are in closes, so do they. Since the FWISD is going to be closed until May 11, if the day cares are closed as well, what are they going to do for child care. I doubt most jobs will be very happy with anyone having to take that kind of time off. I think most people will more more concerned on who is going to watch their children, so they can work and not loose their jobs, instead of thinking "woo hoo let's go to Disney World or Six Flags".

They were saying on a local radio station this morning that they may not have to make the days up. That the school district is may be able to get a waver where they don't have to make them up. What I am wondering though, is today they certain grades were taking another part of the state's standardized testing (TAKS) and all the children in FWISD would miss it.

Although where we live we are technically inside the Fort Worth city limits, we have a Keller address and our DS's go to Keller ISD. Luckily they haven't closed down, and hopefully they won't. However, I'm a stay at home mom so if they do, I'll just have two extra people in the house with me all day.

I am not sure how it is playing out in the states where schools are closing, but in PA the teachers in our district did have to prepare emergancy lesson plans

Great, kids will be shut out of school and instead of the parent staying home with the kid which is what they should do, they will find someone who needs money to take in their kids... along with other kids.

Good time for a flu to spread.

I was in Houston and they showed an interview with some IRATE parents wanting to know what the school management wanted them to do with thier kids this week! They were upset that they felt it was announced late in the day etc. Talked about folks trolling Craigs List for babysitters etc.

I really doubt folks are going from Fort Worth to Disney. Southern California.. OH YEAH. You close a school there and "off we go" Probably something simular for Florid and the border states. But it's a LONG drive from Fort Worth.

Actually I figure all the kids are trying to get invited to the home of the kid with the COOL game set up so they can share the controller etc. No germs will be spread that way.:rotfl:

Not true! Most states allow school systems to get an "Act of God" waiver and not have to make up the days, especially when it happens this close to the end of the school year. We are waiting to hear if we will be allowed to get one, since our school systems were out yesterday and today.

This could possibly ruin our vacation. We were scheduled to leave for Disney on May 24. Now we are waiting to hear if we'll have to make up the days. Since we were only out for two days, it's quite possible that we will. Once we find out, we will know whether to reschedule or cancel.

I take back my earlier statement on Fort Worth.

I have found a post where at least ONE parent is thinking "I could take the kids and go to Disney" KNEW IT WOULD HAPPEN.

As for Act of God Waivers... Maybe Texas is nicer then TN, but I went to school for two extra weeks when I was in High School to make up days. I think the other problem is that the "No child left behind" funding is based on "days" in school per child so........ if that's true in today's economy I can't see many schools leaving the money on the table.

Act of God Waivers do not count against the school system. The schools would be treated as if the students were there, and the schools would get full funding. In fact, the longer the students are out of school, the more likely the schools are to receive the waiver.

So would you rather them loose their job? Some people have no choice but to work and have two working parents. If there jobs tell them they will not have a job if they have to be out that long would you rather they just walk out the door and get on unemployment until they can find another job? Then what about single mothers? I'm sure the parents that have to leave their children with other people would rather stay home with them instead of having someone else take care of them. I just find that statement totally rude.

Well that is one case from a very large school district. I believe the Fort Worth ISD has close to 80,000 students in the district. The person already loves Disney more than the average person and you can tell that b/c they spend time here. I'm sure they would take any reason, even if it is school being closed for the swine flu to go to WDW. I'm sure if their jobs were shut down b/c of a natural disaster where they couldn't work, they would want to go as well.

Update.

Florida has now joined the 'hysteria' and there are folks on the DVC boards "itching" to call Disney and book for next week.

LOL!

36,000 die and we don't close schools are do anything

1 dies and we go into FULL PANIC!

My friend and her family are going to Disney next week. I hope Florida doesn't close schools or DW will be a mad house.

Next week......
EVERYONE SHOULD STAY HOME!

It's DANGEROUS!

I am going to go Tuesday and Wed evenings and I am willing to take the risk for the rest of you!

LOL!

You are correct with your information.

There are a couple of schools closing down in Florida but I haven't heard of anything (since last night) in the Orlando area.

The schools that are closing are in Hillsborough County (Tampa area), Broward County (Miami area) and Lee county (probably Fort Myers).

The possible case in Charlotte County has been cleared. Looks to me like it may be spreading as there were now 9 possible cases, up from 5, in Florida. The numbers may be different now as I haven't checked them today. :confused3

Well now they are trying to re-open some schools since the CDC changed the rules, but the parents and teachers appear to have "scattered" according to one news report I heard. They thought they had all week or even all of next week and can't be found.

GEE, they really thought everyone was locking themselves up in thier homes. Even the CDC admitted that idea didn't work which is one of the reasons they are saying "go ahead and re-open"

I'm glad I don't have a trip planned to DW anytime soon....Sounds like a great place to spread the flu around if parents are not keeping kids home during a time the schools say its not safe to be in school.
