School Changes Silent Night Lyrics... my town

I started out quoting every post I agreed with until I realized you were ALL saying the same thing!! Am I dreaming or do we have unanimous consensus on a DIS thread?? It's a Christmas miracle! Happy Holidays everyone! (Except for the bonehead at the school - he gets a big ol' Merry CHRISTmas!) :santa::santa::santa:

“It’s offensive,” one father told Gusoff. “If you’re going to remove words to not offend other religions, what about the religion that that song belongs to, which is Christianity?” This dad said it best!! And could they pick a song that was any MORE religious?? To me Silent Night is probably THE most religious Christmas song. Merry Christmas!!!!!

The school goofed. If they needed to change any of the lyrics (and it sounds like they changed a lot), they should have picked a different song.

But don't act like (some) Christians don't get upset over song lyrics. I remember boycotts over Two Live Crew "back in the day", and much more recently people getting upset over "Blurred Lines".

At least the school admitted they messed up.

The song is about the birth of Jesus, how does changing the lyrics change that. If they didn't want to offend any non-Christian they should have stuck with Frosty The Snowman. :confused3

Huh?? I'm not acting like anything. I simply said that if they didn't want a religious song they shouldn't have picked Silent Night! Not sure what you're implying in your comment.

I still just can't wrap my head around this.

Did they strike the word "holy" from the program? Or did they consider that "going too far"? :lmao:

I just would have loved sitting in on their editing session to see how they came up with this mess!

When I originally quoted your post I thought I had seen you had posted that you worked in retail and refused to say "Happy Holidays". I finished my post, then went back and saw you either removed that part or I was misremembering, so I took your quote out of my post.

The rest of my post wasn't directed at you (specific), but you (general).

Sure, Christians (and I don't presume to speak for all Christendom here) would find explicit sexual references to be offensive especially if performed in certain settings like mainstream radio or prime-time TV. I'm just guessing here since I'm not familiar with the music you refer to. But you'd never find a church choir taking those songs, sanitizing the lyrics and performing them during worship services.

I don't get it either, why would you even pick that song in the first place :confused3

Our HS does a holiday concert and they perform songs of various faiths. Nobody gets offended and we all get to hear some wonderful music. Its not really that hard to incorporate all faiths into a concert, or none at all and keep the whole thing secular.

Oh, I agree. This was more toward those who say people shouldn't be offended over the words to a song. Or "enjoy it for the music". Or "it's PC run amok". The school goofed, no doubt about it.

...although now that I think about it more maybe it would be a hoot if some of us parents got together and "fixed" Blurred Lines and sang it at a youth event! :rotfl2: (Yes, let's be real - Christian kids listen to this stuff too!!) Merry Christmas Sam!

I honestly do not understand why they picked Silent Night in the first place. And how do you even go about changing it? Every single line would have to be changed. They had to have butchered that song.

As a Christian, I would like to think that I wouldn't have shown my behind if my child had been involved in this fiasco but I'm pretty sure that I would have. We would have walked out but not before physically removing our child from the stage.

Welcome to the PC mess that our country has become!

I am not picking a side on this one because I don't care one way or the other. Not my school, not my kid - don't care.

But .... I really don't think the reason they changed the words is because they don't want anybody to be offended. I don't think I know anybody that's offended by Christmas music. They do it to be inclusive.

If you're going to cast aspersions on their motives - cast aspersions on their actual motives and not some made up motives.

Your more then likely right. still PC BS:rolleyes:

Ridiculous. Just plain ridiculous.

It's a beautiful, song with an incredible meaning. How can you cut all that out? That offends me more. If you are committing to sing a holy song, stick to it. If not, sings frosty or jingle bells.

That doesn't make a difference, the song is about the birth of Jesus on Christmas. You can't really make other religions (or non-religions) inclusive in that. If they want an all inclusive concert/show, then use winter, non denominational songs, or better yet, include religious songs from all faiths. Like the pp said, its still PC BS.
