Anyone on here converted an old school bus to a camper? Or seen one at FW? I would love to see pics if you have any. My DH wants to do this. Thanks!

Never saw one at FW, but I have seen old busses converted to campers. Not necissarily a school bus, but one of those touring busses. There is one camped just acrossed from us right now (we live fulltime in our fiver).

The weirdest "camper" I have seen at FW was a sail boat. It was set up with all the hook ups on one of the sites. I did a double take and asked DW if I was actualy seeing it, but it was a sail boat. Guess you dont need a traditional camper to enjoy the fort.

On a side note, my DD17 wants to convert a school bus into a camper and travel the country when she graduates college (Im so proud of her). But after looking into it, the cost would not be beneficial. It would be cheeper to just buy a good used one.

My Dad did one when I was about 8. We lived in it at the beach (Baypoint campground in Marblehead Oh) during the summers while he was getting his Masters. I have seen them around at different campgrounds they look like fun.

There is someone here on the boards that has one. I saw it when we were at the Fort back in July. I wish I could remember their name on the DIS.

mk199 is the name. but it is not a retro fit. it was actually a factory built bluebird camper. but he has an actual brochure so maybe it would help you with a layout. there was actually a post on here from news years 3ve 2008 and the end part of it was about the blue bird

I helped a friend convert one of the old 'Yellow Demons' several years back. After looking it over and considering all that had to be done and the amount of labor & materials involved, I advised him not to do it. But he decided to do it anyway.

I would not do it again.

Part of this may be solved with new buses - I don't know.

First big problem was no insulation & too many leaky windows (air & some water). Pulling off interior panels to add insulation, having metal cut to cover some of the window openings. Two roof A/C's, welding a compartment to add a generator, plumbing, wiring, holding tanks, then you had to build cabinets & furniture, sinks, toilet. Then repainting the exterior. By the time we were done, he could have bought a used 12 to 14 year old class A, for what he spent in converting it.

However; if the bus you are looking at is in good shape and one of the bigger diesel rigs already with a generator & A/C's, it might be worth it.

1) Whoa !!!!
2) We had one !!!
3) Of course,
. . . it was 1969
. . . we were all in college
. . . it was painted in some strange colors
. . . it glowed in the dark
4) Unfortuantely, I remember only very little more from the 60's.
5) Let alone how we got, remodeled or drove the bus.
