I have heard people say they love school bread.
Have also heard it has changed and now they do not like it.

What exactly is school bread and how has it changed?

School bread is a sweet bread with cream inside (more of a pudding type cream rather than a heavy cream) with icing and coconut on top. I tried this for the first time last March, and eventhough it was good, I still prefer my Cloudberry Horns instead. I am glad I tried it, but it just wasn't for me.

It kind of reminds me of a Boston Cream donut, except instead of chocolate icing, there's a caramel one with toasted coconut on it. Custard filling, but not overly filled.

It used to be my favorite dessert on all of Disney property. The way they used to make it, it was much bigger and softer. Tasted so fresh. Now it is downright awful. The dough always seems stale and there is hardly any filling in it. Plus the topping is different. So sad bc I asked the workers why it was changed and they said they had no idea. That the new way isn't even the way it's made in Norway. They even said they no longer like it. Ugh! Don't bother with it anymore (I used to recommend this to EVERYONE!). Go over to Germany and get the Bavarian cheesecake. That's my new fave now!

I too think the School Bread was better before the change but we still enjoy it. We used to indulge twice per trip but now it is a one time experience.

The last time I had one of these was in 2007. It is like a sweet bun filled with a vanilla pudding type filling. Has icing on it. It was light and not too sweet. Just right in my opinion. I imagine they've changed since then?

That is terrible news!!!! Used to be one of my favorite treats on property!

I so agree with you!! I have written Disney about it bc I'm so upset LOL. Maybe a lot more people need to do the same. This was a snack I even had as my profile pic on FB that people literally emailed me from the parks from their phones asking me what that snack was I was always talking about. I can't get over how different it is now. I haven't had on in 1.5 years and I used to get them numerous times each trip :(

Here's a pic of how it used to look:

It is just soooo different. You can see the different in size, softness, amount of cream. Everything. Blah! LOL

We tried our first at the beginning of Oct and thought it was good even though a bit on the dry side.

When did it change? The first pic looks so yummy!

It was at least a year and a half ago to two years. The last time I had it (and hated it) was May '09. And you are right - it was extremely dry. It used to be so creamy and soft. I'll take a peek at it when I head down in 10 days. It's probably gone down about $.90, but I'd rather pay the extra buck for it to be good again :)

What a bummer. The two pics look like completely different breads. I would've loved to experience the first one. Has anyone tried making it using the online receipe?

My whole family loved the old school bread! It was wonderful. When we tried it this past October we were so sad to see it had changed. The dough was dry and not the same flavor. The cream was more of a vanilla pudding and not the same. The coconut was toasted now. It wasn't awful but no where near as good as it used to be. I would buy many of these on our trips and dream of more when I was home. Now, I can do without.

I agree I would rather pay more money for it to go back to the original.

I'm so glad I read this thread- on our last trip I tried it because of all the recommendations here and after two bites looked at my dh wondering why we couldn't see the appeal- now o know it's because we tried it after the change

I had heard so much about it I finally decided to try it during our trip last February. I have to say it was very good...but it was still partially frozen so I think that took a little bit away from my school bread experience.

OK the one I had looked more like the second picture. And again, when I had mine it was still partly frozen...wish they would bring back the first one, it looks wonderful

Oh dear! The one we had was May 2008, do you think the change came after that? We thought it was delicious! And the funny thing is that I don't like custard tarts very much, and definitely don't like boston cream donuts/cake, but I LOVED the Schoolbread filling.

ok, this explains a lot.

We went in May '09 (late May the week before Memorial Day) and I made sure we tried the School bread from Norway. I told my husband how much everyone loved it.

I believe we got the second picture. That's exactly what it looked like and I was so surprised that it just wasn't that good. Like the DISer's had lied to me.

We must have just missed the good stuff. :(

I was fixing to try it again during our January trip...just in case I was wrong. Now I'll save the snack credit and get something else.

I'm so glad someone started this thread! I couldn't wait to have my family try the school bread and thought we'd all love it. My husband especially loves coconut. We shared 2 in April and we all kinda thought "I don't see what the big deal is." It tasted kinda like a stale boston creme with coconut topping. In a way, I'm glad to know that the recipe had changed. That makes me feel better for not loving it! From the pictures I can see why the old one was soo good...

It's been hit or miss for me with the school bread. We go to Epcot alot. There have been a couple times where it was sooooo DRY, where if it had been my first time tasting school bread, I would have never bought it again. However, that's been only a couple times out of all the times I've had since they changed it. It's definately something to try once! But the Bavarian cheesecake is WAY BETTER!!!! The only problem I've had with the cheesecake is it is not always on their menu. So it's come to the point where I will go to the counter service and check if its on, while dh and ds look at the trains, before I say we are going to get cheesecake.
