On a post relating to kids buying Valentines' flowers for others, someone mentioned how bad she felt for the kids who never get awards at the school awards ceremonies. Here is what our elementary school does:

The story goes that when our elem school opened about 10 years ago, the principal -a seasoned lady - refused to schedule the awards assemblies. The district told her she had to, so she turned them into "Success Assemblies."

Each grade has their own, at the beginning of a day in May. Every kid is called up, shakes the principal's hand (or hugs) while their classroom teacher reads out their successes...many of the certificates they receive are participartory (activities anyone can be in like choir), some are academic or merit based...but EVERYONE gets a special certificate listing their "personal success" (which they've told their teacher in advance of the assembly). It's fun to listen to everyones' personal successes, and I'm so happy that everyone is recognized.
