As a teacher I would not have a problem with one of my students taking a vacation AS LONG AS the parent made sure that the child got "caught up" when he/she returned. I have had children gone for one reason or another and the parent did not work with the child to catch him/her up. I, as a teacher, should not have to work double-time to catch a child up after a vacation. Having said that, the absences are considered excused as long as the parent writes a note stating illness or personal issues. This is elementary, though. I imagine high school is different. Please know that under NCLB schools are under a lot of pressure to reduce absences.
. It is for these people that the rules have been tightened. I have one student who has missed 1-2 days each week since school started. He has not brought a note or anything. Yes, the parents are the primary authority in a child's life. We do have compulsory attendance laws though.
Thanks!
